Madison Memorial High began with no idea what to use as a mascot, but the first principal of the school was a Michigan State graduate, so what better name to use than the Spartans? The Spartans nickname fits the school well. Hard workers on and off the field/court, Memorial strives to be the best in everything, just like the Spartans of ancient Greece. The Memorial staff, students, and community all push to get each other to the next level of success with a never-give-in attitude.

Bruce the Spartan is a very laid-back guy. He likes to hang out with the other students in the stands and tease and play with the staff. Bruce loves to win anything and everything (take this contest, for example) and will do anything he can to help his team. Bruce tries his best to be on the basketball team by shooting hoops at the half, and he blames his bad vision and large hands on his lack of ability to shoot more than 40% on any given night. Bruce the Spartan is a member of all teams at Memorial (talk about a three-season athlete!). Whether it's pumping up the guys while they announce the starting lineup or giving high-fives to all the football players as they sprint out onto the field, Bruce is always there. Bruce loves his fans, he loves the staff, he loves his school, and he loves his community. Bruce loves all aspiring Spartans and likes to visit elementary and middle schools to encourage younger kids to study hard. Bruce the Spartan truly represents the memorial community.

In 2005, the students of Madison Memorial High School voted to name their new mascot Bruce the Spartan after the much-loved and admired principal, Bruce Dahmen. Mr. Dahmen tragically and unexpectedly passed away last year, and Bruce the Spartan continues to inject the former principal's spirit and passion and philosophy of "making good decisions" wherever he goes. Bruce the Spartan tries to embody the attitude, competitiveness, kindness, and love that Bruce Dahmen had throughout his lifetime. Bruce the Spartan and the entire Madison Memorial community constantly strive for "Dahmenation" in honor of our beloved principal.
