History

The Chequamegon School District was established in 2009. Chequamegon was formed through the consolidation of the former Glidden and Park Falls School Districts. The newly formed school adopted the nickname “Screaming Eagles” for the historical impact of the legendary Civil War mascot “Old Abe”. Old Abe was born in the Chequamegon National Forest just east of Park Falls in 1861. Old Abe was raised by the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe leader Chief Sky. Through a series of sales Old Abe ended up being bought by soldiers from Wisconsin who took Old Abe on as their mascot. When the Union Army went into battle they would send Old Abe out to fly over the soldiers to rally and inspire them. Old Abe would fly in the sky screaming. Thus the nickname SCREAMING EAGLES carries strong historical significance to the Chequamegon School District.

About "The Screaming Eagle"

The Chequamegon mascot is simply known as "The Screaming Eagle". The Screaming Eagle has a big job at Chequamegon events. Just like the Soldiers in the Civil War turned to Old Abe for inspiration, the same can be said for the Chequamegon community in regards to the Screaming Eagle. At crucial parts in a contest the Screaming Eagle will rally the crowd into a frenzy to give the team the extra boost it needs!
