UW-Stevens Point Tabbed Baseball Preseason Favorite
MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been tabbed to win the 2010 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) baseball championship, according to the league’s sports information directors.
The Pointers, who claimed a share of the last year’s title with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater, claimed four first-place votes in the preseason survey. UW-Stevens Point, ranked No. 18 nationally in D3baseball.com’s preseason poll, has secured five consecutive WIAC tournament crowns. The Pointers have won 25 or more games each of the past 13 seasons and have won 30 or more four of the past five years.
This year’s roster boasts eight returning starting position players, including senior Jeremy Richter, who claimed the 2009 WIAC Position Player of the Year plaque. Head coach Pat Bloom entered the 2010 season needing eight wins to reach 200 in his career.
UW-Whitewater - the winner of eight of the last 10 WIAC regular-season championships - accumulated three first-place votes and is slotted for second in the league projections. The Warhawks have won 30 or more games in five of six seasons under head coach John Vodenlich.
Senior Jordan Stine, a three-time All-WIAC first team selection, returns from a shoulder injury and junior Jeff Donovan, a two-year first team choice, is back after sitting out last season.
Prucha Field underwent a major renovation since the completion of the 2009 campaign - most notably permanent lighting was installed, along with synthetic turf on the entire playing surface. The new complex is named in honor of Jim Miller who served as the program’s head coach for 17 seasons (1983-07) and tallied 416 wins.
UW-Oshkosh owns a conference-best 29 regular-season titles and has compiled a 216-84 record the past six seasons. The Titans have won 27 or more games in 17 of the last 19 years. A season ago, UW-Oshkosh owned a 15-0 record when leading after the seventh inning and junior Nolan Fadness was 16-for-16 in stolen base attempts. Head coach Tom Lechnir is the winningest coach in WIAC history (647-221-1), while his winning percentage of .745 ranks sixth in NCAA Division III listings.
UW-La Crosse sophomore Jay Fanta was the only Eagle to start all 38 games in 2009, leading the team in hitting (.384), at-bats (151), runs scored (37), hits (58), doubles (18), home runs (6), RBI (41), total bases (96) and walks (18). Last year’s squad hit .304 with runners in scoring position. Head coach Chris Schwarz entered this season needing eight victories to achieve 100 in his career.
UW-Stout first-year head coach Seth Maier was a four-time All-WIAC first team selection with the Blue Devils and claimed the Position Player of the Year trophy in 2007. This year’s roster features 15 returnees, 15 players in their first year at UW-Stout and only one player returning to the same position.
UW-Platteville is coming off its best conference season in school history with 11 wins and the 2009 campaign was the third time in team history with at least 20 victories. Last year’s club belted 29 home runs - second-best in school archives - while the pitching staff set a school mark with 238 strikeouts.
UW-Superior has the most returning position players in head coach Eddy Morgan’s three seasons. The Yellowjackets have totaled 31 wins the last two years - their best two-season stretch according to available information.

Wissports.net PHOENIX -- Following are a few random thoughts while spending a few days in Arizona watching some exhibition baseball and getting ready for the high school spring baseball season to begin.
For those prep baseball players who also play basketball, practice starts Monday, March 22, two days after the WIAA championship games for boys’ basketball.
First pitch in Phoenix: It was 58 degrees at Maryvale Baseball Park Thursday and a balmy 44 in Milwaukee at game time. At least there was some sun in the Valley of the Sun. With temps in the 50s most of the game – it felt like the 40s in the press box – it felt like Opening Days of long ago in Milwaukee County Stadium where more hot chocolate was sold than beer, if that was ever possible. Temps are supposed to reach 70 degrees on Friday. We’ll see.
Rappin’ with Gomez: New Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez said in a conversation Thursday morning that he has his own recording studio at home in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Gomez, who was acquired from Minnesota during the off-season for shortstop J.J. Hardy, loves to rap. But don’t expect him to be going big time any time soon.
“When I need a break or to relax I spend an hour in the studio and everything’s great,” said Gomez, who has impressed his teammates with his range in center field. “It’s just for me and my family. Something I enjoy and have fun with.”
Preview of things to come: Alcides Escobar lined a one-out single to left field and Ryan Braun smashed an 0-1 pitch over the left-field fence for 2-0 Brewers lead in the bottom of first inning of Thursday’s 7-3 loss to Oakland in a split-squad game played at Maryvale Baseball Park. Left-fielder Travis Buck took one look and didn't move. Braun nearly went deep to right field in his next at-bat with a warning track drive.
On the prowl: New Brewers lefty Randy Wolf made his second start of spring training for the Crew Thursday. He allowed one hit and struck out one in first inning and struck out the side in the second, following a lead-off walk. He also allowed a lead-off walk but pitched his way out of trouble.
Did you know: Randy Wolf’s brother, Jim, is a Major League baseball umpire. Jim Wolf, who is seven years older than Randy, worked the bases at Thursday’s Brewers game.
“I looked up and saw the umpires walking out and said, ‘hey, that looks like my brother. It is,’ ” Randy Wolf said with a smile. “He’s never worked a game during the season I’ve pitched in but he’s been behind the plate in an exhibition game.”
Tip of the day: Brewers left-hander Chris Narveson pitched three innings in Milwaukee’s 3-1 loss to Cincinnati in a split-squad game Thursday. Narveson, whose dad was born in Dodgeville and mom is a Wauwatosa native, said it is important to just play the game.
“Go out and play as many games as you can,” said Narveson, who is vying for a spot in the Brewers starting rotation. “There are so many distractions out there. Just to get out on the field and play, whether it’s pitching or hitting or being in the field. You can’t get better unless you play. Enjoy it for what it is. It’s a game and it’s fun.”
