Level 3 Friday Night Recaps

Five Level Three games were contested Friday night, with berths in the state semi-finals on the line for those ten teams. Here's a recap of those games:

Big Foot 22, Ripon 8
After an early deficit, Big Foot roared back to take a 22-8 win over host Ripon. As often was the case this year for the Chiefs, Mike Walker made big plays at big times to lead them to victory. Walker finished with 188 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground, and caught 3 passes for 62 yards and another touchdown.

For Ripon, an outstanding season came to an end, and running back Connor Hanson once again came up big.

Kewaunee 25, Xavier 14
The wind was howling in Kewaunee Friday night, forcing the Indians to go to the ground to get the majority of their yards. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, as Kewaunee has a trio of outstanding running backs. Criag Christman was especially outstanding, running it 19 times for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 47-yard run on a fourth and seven play to put them up in the third quarter.

Xavier heads home knowing a pair of fourth down plays changed the game. The one Christman converted and the one the Hawks failed to convert just four plays earlier at midfield.

Catholic Central 35, Shullsburg 21
Catholic Central and WSN Dave Krieg Award finalist Brian Fliess was his usual outstanding self last night, throwing for 105 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 132 and one score in leading the Hilltoppers into Level 4.

After some upsets earlier in the playoffs, Shullsburg just wasn't able to stick with the speed of Catholic Central. The Miners totaled just 202 yards in the game.

Franklin 27, Badger 26
The most exciting game of the night took place on the FieldTurf in Greendale as Franklin made enough big plays late in the game to hold off Badger. Included in that was a blocked extra point late in the fourth quarter, a recovered onside kick, and an outstanding catch by Brady Oates on a fourth down that essentially sealed it.

Merrill 21, Marshfield 3
Merrill used to be in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, and will return next year. The Bluejays proved they belong and picked up a confidence boost with a 21-3 win over a strong Marshfield team. Ross VanDerGeest came up big, carrying the ball 29 times for 183 yards and two scores.

Marshfield missed three key offensive weapons for most of the game, and were out-played by Merrill. A tough way to end a great season.
