Boys H.S. Hockey Preview #15-State Tournament Quarter-Finalist Stevens Point Panthers

by DPlaya , 11/18/2009

Chris Walby and I are teaming up to provide boys high school hockey previews for teams from around the state.  While we’d love to preview all 90+ teams we just don’t have the manpower to get to them all.  So, we spent some time discussing amongst ourselves which teams have had recent success, and might be poised to repeat that success.  We also considered any teams on the rise that might be worthy of coverage, and of course all of the State Tournament teams from last season automatically get previews.  We’ve come up with a list of around 30 teams we intend to preview, and may add to that list depending upon availability of information and general interest from readers about specific teams.  Feel free to e-mail us directly at dplayawi@hotmail.com and chris@wiscohockey.com if you have any questions or comments about our previews.  You can also leave comments at the bottom of each post if we’ve missed a player or there’s other information we have not uncovered that you’d like to share with other readers (players injured, not going out this season, playing somewhere else, etc.).  Some previews can be found at the Hockey in Wisconsin Blog and others at the WiscoHockey Blog.

Who Returns?:

Stevens Point plans to return a huge Senior class of thirteen players.  They will have at least two very good offensive lines capable of lighting the lamp on any shift.  The top five returning players combined for 122 points last season.  In addition, forward Joey Haydock who is playing for Team Wisconsin Major this season was out a good chunk of last season and therefore finished just ninth on the team in points.  In the net, three players that are Seniors this year battled it out for playing time last season.  Isaac Gorell got the bulk of the playing time (690 minutes) while Aaron Pavelski (240 minutes) and Trevor Koziczkowski (145 minutes) also saw some time.  At their State Tournament Quarter-Final game, Gorell let in 2 goals on nine shots in the first period and was relieved by Pavelski who stopped 20 of 24 over the second and third periods. Three of their top five and seven of their top ten scorers return.

Hockey: Badger Men Sign 7 (3 from Wisconsin) & Delgadillo to Sioux City Permanently

by DPlaya , 11/18/2009

The Badger Men's hockey team has signed seven players in the early signing period according to Andy Baggot.  Here's the list:

Forwards:

Tyler Barnes, Waterloo USHL-Burnsville, MN
Sean Little, Green Bay USHL-Fond du Lac, WI
Mark Zengerle, Salmon Arm BCHL-Rochester, NY
Jefferson Dahl, Youngstown USHL-Eau Claire, WI
Mike Mersch, USNTDP U-18's-Park Ridge, IL

Defense:
Chase Drake, Sioux City USHL-Mosinee, WI
Frankie Simonellie, USNTDP U-18's-Bensenville, IL

The Badgers will be expected to add the following forwards to this class:

Tyler Lapic, Omaha USHL-New Prague, MN
Gavin Hartzog, Fargo USHL-Milwaukee, WI

In addition, these forwards were offered as 2010/2011:

Matt Paape, Sioux City USHL-Appleton, WI
Cody Strang, Youngstown USHL-Madison, WI

Paape has the best chance of being brought in for 2010 at this point.  If an extra defender is needed due to early departures, the Badgers also could push up the anticipated 2011 arrival of Troy Hesketh from Minnetonka High School, or leave him for 2011 and recruit another defenseman.

You can find the complete UW Men's Hockey recruit list here.

Thanks to a heads up from a blog reader, I'm happy to report that defenseman Jose Delgadillo of the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals has joined Sioux City of the USHL for the rest of the season

Goals lost to graduation-39 of 77 goals=50.65%
Assists lost to graduation-37 of 73 assists=50.69%

Eight players graduated for Stoughton- five forwards, two defensemen, two defenseman and First-Team All-State goaltender Andrew Martin, who now plays Junior hockey in the NAHL.  Riley Zehner and Cody Larson’s offense is going to be missed this season, especially since the Vikings only scored 77 goals in 24 games last season.  Andrew Martin’s presence in the net was huge for Stoughton last season as his save percentage was 94.4% heading into the State Tournament last season, and his goals against were 1.33.

Who Returns?:

The Vikings plan to return just four Seniors.  Their leading point-getter from last season is Junior Trevor Hoth who put up 20 goals and 9 assists and will return this season along with their third leading point-getter last season, Senior Dillon Gavazzoni.  Hoth has spent some time filling in for Team Wisconsin Minor this preseason.  Backup goaltender Dylan Anderson is a Junior this season and logged 84 minutes last year.  Two of their top five and five of their top ten scorers return.

Hockey: I Got a Feelin'-UW Men's Letter of Intent Signees; Schmaltz & Delgadillo *Updated*

by DPlaya , 11/14/2009

To quote the Black Eyed Peas...."I gotta feelin'.  With the early signing period underway for National Letters of Intent, so far we only know that Eau Claire native Jefferson Dahl has signed his LOI.  Hockey in Wisconsin has also learned that Fond du Lac native Sean Little will sign his LOI over the weekend as well.  Beyond that...I've got a feelin'.  I'm not sure if the feeling might be from something I ate, or if maybe there is going to be a surprise during the Letter of Intent period for the Badgers.  I feel like there is going to be a surprise in the works but haven't been able to uncover any solid evidence at this point.  Maybe it is just indigestion....but I'll keep digging.  I hope I'm wrong because I don't think there is such a thing as a positive surprise during an early signing period.

Chris Walby from the Wisco Hockey Blog here at WSN uncovered the fact that UW defensive recruit Jordan Schmaltz was playing with Sioux Falls of the USHL last weekend, and I think everyone had assumed he had permanently left the Chicago Mission to join Sioux Falls (myself included).  This weekend, the Sioux Falls roster would seem to indicate that is not the case as not only is Schmaltz not playing, but defenseman Jose Delgadillo from the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals Midget Major played for Sioux Falls on Saturday finishing with no stats on the score sheet.  Sioux Falls put one of their regular defensemen on the 45-day IR on October 23rd, so they are likely utilizing some replacements for the time being.

I've been meaning to provide a couple of links over to the Western College Hockey Blog as he's got some short notes on Team Wisconsin Minor players.  Here Chris discusses the Nike/Bauer NIT and Elite League and mentions Max McCormick and Nolan Kirley while he mentions McCormick and Joe Fiala in this post about the Bauer NIT.
