High School Hockey Preview #6- Mosinee Indians

D Playa and I are teaming up to provide boys high school hockey previews for teams from around the state.  While we’d love to preview all 90+ teams we just don’t have the manpower to get to them all.  So, we spent some time discussing amongst ourselves which teams have had recent success, and might be poised to repeat that success.  We also considered any teams on the rise that might be worthy of coverage, and of course all of the State Tournament teams from last season automatically get previews.  We’ve come up with a list of around 30 teams we intend to preview, and may add to that list depending upon availability of information and general interest from readers about specific teams.  Feel free to e-mail us directly at dplayawi@hotmail.com and chris@wiscohockey.com if you have any questions or comments about our previews.  You can also leave comments at the bottom of each post if we’ve missed a player or there’s other information we have not uncovered that you’d like to share with other readers (players injured, not going out this season, playing somewhere else, etc.).  Some previews can be found at the Hockey in Wisconsin Blog and others at the WiscoHockey Blog

Boys High School Hockey Preview:  Mosinee Indians

The Numbers:

Record last season- 11-8-1
Goals lost to graduation- 53 of 98 goals= 54%
Assists lost to graduation- 43 of 62 assists= 69%
Scoring lost to graduation-  97 of  160 points= 60%

Players Lost:

Arguably the heart and sole of the Mosinee Indians over the past two seasons, Parker Tomczyk (22-23-45) and Ethan Nauman (29-15-44), were the Indians two biggest losses at graduation time.  Tomczyk and Nauman were key components during the team’s run to the 2007-2008 WIAA State Tournament and are currently playing in the NAHL.  Brandon Vest (0-1-1) and Dan Knoedler (
2-4-6) are gone as well.
Who Returns?:

Senior defenseman Mitch Dye (0-6-0), who was limited to 8 games last year due to a shoulder injury, will anchor the Indians defense in 2009–2010.  The senior Co-Captain brings a physical presence and some offense to a solid group on the blue line.  Sophomore Bryce Hladovcak (18-13-31), Mosinee’s top returning scorer, had a huge season as a freshman in 2009.  Bryce, is big kid with a big shot.  Hladovcak led the team in game winning goals last season.  Junior Jevret Giese (6-4-10) will see action at both defense and forward and Sophomore Jared Sprink (5-5-10) will also be counted on to fill the void left by leading scorers Parker Tomczyk and Ethan Nauman.  In net, Junior Wade Michalski has been the starter for the past two seasons.  Wade was a huge factor his freshman year during Mosinee’s trip to state.  It was Wade’s brilliant performance that led the Indians past a potent Wausau West team in a dramatic WIAA Sectional Final in 2007-2008.  The 2009-2010 Mosinee Indians will have a solid team defensively playing in front of Wade, but the question is if they have enough offense to get past the powerhouse (Wausau West) in their sectional.  No Parkside prediction here.
