Team Wisconsin Major played in the Elite League Tournament this past weekend and wound up losing in the consolation game. They started their weekend play on Friday night and wound up with a tough 2-3 loss against #2 seed Southwest. Here's a recap from a friend of the blog:
Team Wisconsin was missing Brad Navin due to football and Shayne McLaughlin due to a minor injury.
Team SW scored the only goal in the first period. Then just 90 seconds into the second period, Max McCormick scored off assists from his line mates Berger and Leahy. The score remained tied until the end of the 2nd period when SW was able to capitalize on a pp goal. TW quickly answered with a goal from Leahy (assists Berger and McCormick) so they went to the locker rooms in a 2-2 tie. The third period was scoreless until SW was able to get a garbage goal with just 0:38 seconds left on the game clock. Penalties for the game were 5 for SW and 6 for TW, although one of TW's was a check from behind and they lost Erik Larabell for the third period because it gave him the maximum of 3 penalties per game. Shots on goal favored SW at 44-29, giving Austin Schmid 41 saves.
In their second game, Team Wisconsin took it to Team North by the score of 5-2. Here's a recap:
TW Majors faced Team North on Saturday night in the second round of the Elite League Tournament. It took until the last 20 seconds of the first period for either team to score, but it was North that got on the board first with a short-handed goal.
Early in the 2
nd period TW successfully killed off a roughing penalty, and then went on to tie the game with a goal from Nathan Trannel who got a helper from Cody Dixon. Just 10 seconds later, Dixon took a charging penalty and put TW back on the penalty kill. Each team would take 3 additional penalties in the 2
nd period, but no goals were scored on power plays. This period ended in a 1-1 tie.
The 3
rd period started with TW successfully killing off a penalty that remained from the 2
nd period. Scoring started again half way through the period with Trannel getting his second goal of the game (assist to Dock), putting TW up 2-1. TW got the next tally as well when McCormick passed to Dixon who shot from the point to put TW ahead 3-1 with 5 minutes left in the game. North then got frustrated and took a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for kicking and punching TW’s McCormick. TW took advantage of the power play and Berger scored off an assist from Klitzke. With 2 minutes left in the game, TW still had the one man advantage but a cross ice pass was picked off and North got their final goal short-handed, making the score 4-2. North then pulled their goalie and McCormick was able to get an empty netter (Knetter assist) to bring the final score to 5-2 in favor of TW. TW outshot North 42-39.
In the consolation game, Team Wisconsin could not keep pace with Team Great Plains and lost 2-7.
Team Wisconsin Major finishes the Elite League 4-17-3 and is 7-17-3 on the season. They will play in the Nike Bauer Tournament this coming weekend in New Hope, MN.
Team Wisconsin Minor started their weekend 1-0-1 by earning a tie with Team Metro Southeast 3-3 and defeating Team Northwest 8-3. Team Wisconsin Minor defeated Team Metro East 6-2 on Sunday. Team Wisconsin Minor is now 17-10-3 and finishes Elite League play 11-4-3, which should put them in 2nd place for the league.
Team Wisconsin Minor is slated to play in the Nike Bauer Tournament in Chicago, IL this coming weekend.
