Hockey: Playing Catch Up-including Videos *UPDATED*

by DPlaya , 3/11/2010

This post is to try to get caught up on some things that occurred during or after State Tournament.  If you didn't catch our post during State Tournament, here's a link to the Boys Hockey All-State Teams which was named at that time.

Our online coverage of the games was a lot of fun and a lot of work.  Hopefully everyone enjoyed them.  We also had some great guests including Wausau West Coach Peter Susens after their Semi-Final win, Bill McCoshen from the Janesville Jets and Team Wisconsin, Luke Strand who is the Head Coach of the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL, Former Badger and NHL'er and current Team Wisconsin Minor Head Coach Gary Schuchuck, Mr. Hockey Finalist Brian Kemp, Marian University Women's Head Coach Mike Cowan (who also developed the Boys State Senior Tournament), and more.  Thanks to all our guests for taking the time to share their thoughts with our readers and listeners.

I think Chris Walby might want to grow up to be a hockey Color Analyst following his first chance to do color for hockey at the State Tournament...

The Badger Men received a verbal commitment from forward Brendan Woods of the Chicago Steel of the USHL for 2011.  I've added him to the Badger Recruits Page of our Recruiting Section.  Also, I tend to update the recruiting section in the off-season as I actually have time to work on it a bit, so look for some updates before the puck drops on next season.

The Tier I U16 & U18 State Playoffs take place in Madison this weekend at Cap Ice.  Team Wisconsin Minor will square off against the Madison Capitols U16 in a three game series (third game only if necessary).  Team Wisconsin Major has a bit more competition as the Capitols, Jr. Gamblers and Jr. Admirals will all be represented at the State Tournament.

The Tier II U16 & U18 Playoffs are also taking place this weekend in Fond du Lac.  March 19-21st the Central District Tier 1 Playoffs will also be held in Fond du Lac, where the winner of the State Playoff will play against the top teams from our district.

The NAPHL, which was formed by the NAHL this season and features both U16 & U18 leagues has announced their All-NAPHL Teams.  The All-NAPHL U18 Team features many Wisconsin players including goaltender Michael Baldwin from the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals who made the First Team, defenseman Jarrod Rabey from the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals who made the Second Team, forward Noah Nelson from the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals who made the Third Team as well as goaltender Garrett Patrick of Hudson who plays for Chadder's.  Honorable Mention players from Wisconsin included forward Peter Maric from the Jr. Admirals and goaltender Alex Rigsby from the Jr. Admirals and who will be playing for the UW Women's Team next season.

Here's a Edgewood/Notre Dame State Tournament highlight video from a Madison television station..

Girls Hockey February Player of the Month - Alyssa Ahlgren, Hayward

by Jay Messar, 3/8/2010

In a highly contested race of offense vs. defense, Hayward junior forward Alyssa Ahlgren (pictured) earned February's WSN Player of the Month with 1640 total votes and 48 percent overall. In a close second was freshman phenom and University School of Milwaukee goalie Emily Wigdale who earned 46 percent of the total votes. Tess Nejedlo from Fondy/Waupun, Hillary Drake from Central Wisconsin and St. Croix Valley's Alice Cranston rounded out the nominees.

Ahlgren recorded a team-best nine goals and six assists in February alone as the Hurricanes went 3-3 overall. Ahlgren also notched two hat-tricks in respective 8-3 and 4-2 wins over Moose Lake and Chippewa Falls, and recorded a pair of goals and assists in an 8-0 Regional playoff victory over Menomonie.

On the season, Ahlgren led the Hurricanes with 23 goals and 43 total points--finishing in tenth place on state points leaders. Hayward finished 12-10 overall this season.

Girls Hockey February Team of the Month - University School of Milwaukee

by Jay Messar, 3/8/2010

With an overwhelming 79 percent of the total vote, the University School of Milwaukee earned February's WSN Team of the Month honors. Bay Area, Hudson, St. Croix Valley and Central Wisconsin rounded out the nominees, but made up just 21 percent of the remaining votes combined.

The Wildcats won all six of their games in the month of February, including a trio of playoff games over the Middleton Lynx, MSO Icebergs and the Capitol Cougars en route to its first State Semifinal berth at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. And while their 2-0 defeat at the hands of eventual State champion St. Croix Valley wasn't quite the ending it had hoped for, USM definitely made an impact on the girls hockey scene.

With offensive production from forwards like Amy Bauzenberger and Megan Bailey, this relatively young team proved why they earned a State berth by outscoring opponents 17-1 in the month alone. USM freshman goalie Emily Wigdale was a force in the net, letting just a single goal in 123 shots get past her. The Wildcats finished the year a more than respectable 19-7 overall record.
