First youth clinic of year to take place in Milwaukee

by Nicholas Kartos, 10/6/2009

The WBCA will be hosting several youth coaching clinics across the state in the fall and early winter this year.  The clinics are aimed at youth coaches (8th grade and below) and feature some of the top high school and D3 college coaches in the state.

The first of these clinics kicks off on Tuesday, October 6th in the Milwaukee area at Sussex-Hamilton high school.  Speakers include Craig Haase - Arrowhead Boys, Dan Carey - Hamilton Girls and Dave Buchanan - Carroll University.

To download the sign-up form click here.

The second clinic is in Eau Claire at the Eau Claire YMCA - Nelson Gym on Monday, October 19th.

The clinic features Ted Alberson, girls coach at Flambeau and Kevin Orr, boys coach at Rice Lake.  Alberson will be talking about maximizing practice and the full-court pressure that has helped him win 4 state championships.  Orr will discuss drills for individual skill development and the open post offense.  There will also be a question and answer session with a coaches panel after the two speakers.

With all clinics you can pay at the door, the cost is $10 per coach or $5 per coach community special for if your youth club brings 20 attendees.

Johnston joins strong WBCA Fall Clinic line-up

by Nicholas Kartos, 9/28/2009

Aaron Johnston from South Dakota State will take the place of Doug Bruno at this weekend’s WBCA Fall Coaches Clinic.  Johnston has a career record of 225-65, has won a DII National Championship and has been at the helm for a very successful transition from DII to DI for the Jack Rabbits.  Last season his team defeated three big ten teams during the regular season and almost upset Baylor in the second round the NCAA tournament.

Bruno needed to back out last minute due to a recent assignment as assistant coach for the Women’s National Team and needed to be in Russia.

Johnston joins a stellar speaking crew that includes Bo Ryan, Buzz Williams, Bob Huggins, Saul Phillips, and Tod Kowalczyk.  (Updated Schedule)

Friday night features breakout sessions with some of the top high school and D3 college coaches in the state.  College coaches set to present are Bob Semling (UW-SP), Todd Adrian (Edgewood) and Dick Luther (UW-Whitewater).  High school coaches will include Jim Blaine (Benton), Marquis Hines (Vincent), Ryan Walz (Wisconsin Lutheran), Bob Maronde (Grafton) and Steve Collins (Madison Memorial).

The clinic also features a new format.  First and foremost the entire event will be held in one location - the Madison Marriott West.  Inside one of the ballrooms the WBCA will have a full court set up which is graciously being donated by Snap Sports.  The other format change is moving from Friday/Saturday to Thursday/Friday.

On both Thursday and Friday the WBCA will be sponsoring a hospitality area in the Marriott's atrium.

WBCA Members can register online for the clinic when the sign up to renew or register for a membership.  Online registrations will be closed tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3pm.  There is also a registration form for the clinic for non-WBCA members or the WBCA members who don't want to pay online.

We will also be accepting walk-up registrations on both Thursday and Friday of the clinic.

Below is a list of those attending the clinic in alpha order as of 3pm on Monday, September 28th.
