Wishoops.net Editor Germantown sophomore Zak Showalter received his first scholarship offer from a NCAA Division I school over the weekend.
The 6-foot-2 Showalter took unofficial visits to both North Dakota State and South Dakota Staet and was extended a scholarship offer from North Dakota State coach Saul Phillips.
“Saul came and watched us in Las Vegas last July so I knew there was some strong interest,” said Justin Litscher, Showalter’s coach with the Wisconsin Swing grassroots program. “He told Zak he wanted basketball players in his program and Zak is a basketball player. He is a very, very competitive kid.”
Showalter averaged six points per game as a freshman for a Germantown squad that went 21-3 and advanced to the WIAA Division 1 State Tournament for the second straight season. Showalter scored 14 points and made three three-point shots in the Warhawks' 86-73 loss to eventual state champion Madison Memorial in the state quarterfinals last March.
The son of Germantown coach and former UW-Platteville standout Steve Showalter, Zak Showalter is a long-distance sharpshooter who can play either guard position. He is also an excellent defender and a player who gives maximum effort every time he steps onto the court.
“Zak played some point guard for us last year in Las Vegas and I think Steve plans to play him at point guard some of the time at Germantown this season as well,” Litscher said. “As more schools see that he is a combination guard, I think more and more schools will show interest.”
Showalter is currently ranked No. 8 among state prospects in the class of 2012 by Wishoops.net. In addition to the offer from North Dakota State and interest from South Dakota State, Showalter is also garnering strong interest from both Green Bay and Milwaukee.
Quick Hitters … Litscher said Madison Edgewood sophomore Austin Arians, also a member of the Wisconsin Swing program, is garnering interest from some Division I schools. Both North Dakota State and South Dakota State have expressed interest in Arians in recent weeks.
