WisSports.net Editor Propelled by the all-around talent and hunger of senior guard Josh Gasser, Port Washington enters 2009-10 as the No. 1-ranked team among WIAA Division 2 schools in the upcoming edition of the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook, which will hit the streets in mid November.
The 6-foot-4 Gasser is a four-year starter for Port Washington coach John Bunyan and one of the truly elite players in the state. Ranked No. 3 among seniors in Wisconsin by WisSports.net, Gasser gave a verbal commitment to Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan last month, selecting the Badgers over Northern Iowa and Northwestern.
The returning Player of the Year in the North Shore Conference, Gasser averaged 21.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game as a junior while leading the Pirates to a 16-6 record.
Gasser had an exceptionally strong showing on the grassroots scene last spring and summer while playing for the Wisconsin Swing, and earned scholarship offers from both Arizona State and Maryland before ultimately deciding to attend Wisconsin.
Senior forward Cory Steinmetz (6-4) and junior forward Shane Kennedy (6-4) joined Gasser in the starting rotation and form a solid nucleus for Port Washington.
Look for senior center Zach Schultz (6-6) and promising sophomore guard Sawyer Mosley (6-2) to also play important roles for Port Washington, which opens the season on November 28 against Waukesha North in a game scheduled for 4 p.m. at Carroll University.
The 25th edition of the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook will be shipped in mid November. Over the next several days, we’ll release the preseason team rankings that appear in this year’s edition of the WBY, which includes conference-by-conference previews, hundreds of photos, statistics, rosters, schedules, team and player rankings and much, much more.
