January Girls Basketball Player of the Month: Carley Emery, Siren
posted by Jay Messar at 2/9/2010
In one of the closest and most hotly contested and highly participated-in polls since the site's debut,
Siren junior guard
Carley Emery narrowly edged Luxemburg-Casco's Janelle VandenPlas to earn the WSN January Player of the Month honor.
Each player earned 47% of the 3,823 total votes cast, yet it was Emery who pulled away down the stretch to win by a meager 20 total votes. Hayward's Morgan Lee, Lake Country Lutheran's Emily Dufek and Madison East's Nyakour Deang rounded out the nominees.
Emery, an All-State Honorable Mention last season in the Dragons' first-ever run to the WIAA State Tournament, has been more than just a scorer for Siren this season. In the month of January alone, the 5'6" guard went for 30 points against Cameron, 36 against Frederic and scored all 21 of her game-high 21 points in the second half against West Lakeland rival Luck.
Since, Emery tallied 31 points at Drummond and 37 against Solon Springs in a pair of Dragon victories. Siren is currently ranked just outside the Top 10 in Division 4 and sits atop the West Lakeland standings with an 8-0 league mark and 14-3 record overall.
The nominees for February's Player of the Month will be named at the end of the month. Keep an eye out for the list and remember to vote for whom you feel is most deserving!
