Winona State Commit Tessa Wells Goes One on One

One of the things I like most about WSN's showcase that was held this past September is the opportunity to watch so many talented players from around our great state.  Each year, I am amazed by the young women that come that day to showcase their skills.  This year, the coaches voted River Falls senior Tessa Wells as the Showcase MVP.

The honor was much deserved as the 5'7 Wells showed everyone that day why she will be continuing her basketball career at Winona State University next fall.  Last season, Tessa averaged 18 points a game for River Falls and helped the Wildcats to a 11-11 overall record.  She was a first team Big Rivers Selection and a second team selection as a sophomore.

I had the opportunity recently to go one on one with Tessa about her college making decision process.

JA - What made Winona State the perfect fit for you?
TW - Winona was a perfect fit for me because I felt the most comfortable there.  I loved the campus, it reminded me a lot of River Falls, where I live.  The coaches were great to me and straight forward, which I liked a lot.  I watched them play before ever talking to them and I loved their style, I definitely could see myself as a player there even before I made the decision.

JA - What went into your thought process to make that final decision?
TW - I wanted to make sure I felt comfortable with the coaching staff and I did.  Playing time was also a big thing that I looked at as I wanted to make sure I had the potential to play my freshman year.  Lastly, I looked at the style of play.  I loved Winona State's offense; their positions were interchangable and their pace was fast.  That is the perfect fit for my style of play.

JA - What other schools were you looking at?
TW - I had many that I talked to along the way, but I had really narrowed it down to Concordia and Winona early on in the recruiting process.  I was also looking at University of Mary for a while and visited Moorhead State and UND in Grand Forks.

JA - You brought up the recruiting process, did you enjoy that process?
TW - I really did enjoy it.  It was fun to hear from and get to know so m any different coaches and visit the different campuses.  One of the hardest things I have had to do was pick just one school, and I greatly appreciate the interest I got from the other schools.

JA - What are you looking forward to most about playing college basketball?
TW - I am a very intense player so I am excited for the intensity of the college game.  I can't wait to play against great competition and improve my game at the collegiate level.

JA - Do you feel a sense of relief having made your college decision already?
TW - I feel a huge relief having my college decision made already.  It is nice to go into the season stress free so I can totally focus on this year's season and not be worrying about next year's.

JA - You brought up this season Tessa, what are you looking forward to most your senior year?
TW - I am obviously looking forward to my senior season of basketball, it is going to be a good one.  It will be a bitter sweet ending.  Everything is my last now so I'm making the best of everything: pep fests, sporting events, spirit days; it has all been a blast so far.

JA - While we are talking about your senior season, do you have any specific goals for this year...for yourself or your team?
TW - I really want our team to make it to sectionals for the first time and win our conference.  That would be great.  I, personally, would like to score my 1,000 point this year and be in the race for Player of the Year in our conference.

Tessa Wells will undoubtedly be one of the seniors whose name is mentioned throughout the season on our site as we watch her near her career 1000 point and help her team to what could be a very magical year.
