Who Am I...Round 5 and Results Interview
posted by Jennie Adrian at 11/5/2009

Congratulations…I thought I made that one more difficult, but you were right if you thought Monday’s Who Am I was La Crosse Logan senior Michelle Mueller. The six foot point guard and I discussed her goals for this year and her hopes for the future…
JA – Being six foot tall, you’d be considered “tall” for your position. What do you think are some advantages and/or disadvantages that you face because of your height at the point guard position? MM – An advantage of being a tall point guard is the defensive match up I draw. When someone shorter than me is guarding me, I have the ability to see over them and distribute the ball to my teammates, or I’ve picked up a post move or two. If someone taller is guarding me, I have an option of a dribble drive with my foot speed and then when someone comes to help, I get to dish it. That’s my favorite role! As far as a disadvantage, I honestly can’t think of one. I guess that when I play in clubs or at showcase type events, I typically end up filling other roles because of my height…but even that has turned into an advantage as I have become more versatile by being able to play all five positions.
JA – Let’s talk about your upcoming season. This season your team has a couple of very tough games this year on the road facing Milwaukee King and Milwaukee Vincent back to back on December 4th and 5th. What are your thoughts on those games and what do you hope that experience will provide for your team? MM – I’m very excited and anxious for these two games. Our coach really wanted to challenge us this year and make our schedule tough. We are playing against two of the best teams in the state very early in the season, but it will be a good test. It will show us our strengths and weaknesses and what works best for us.
JA – This past fall, several of your teammates attended the WSN showcase and looked very impressive. It’s obvious you all are working hard for the upcoming season. What are your goals for this season for both your team and yourself? MM – As seniors, this is our last chance to make it back to state. A goal I have for myself if to make sure I can do whatever is needed for us to win. In the past my strength has always been getting the ball to other people, however, this year I will have to be ready to step up and score when needed. The better we play as a team, the better we will do.
JA – What are you looking most forward to this senior basketball season? MM – I’m looking forward to learning new things from Coach Bruce, and also leaving everything I have in me on the floor each and every game. We have three seniors who have been on varsity since our freshman year. That season was unbelievable as we were city champs, conference champs, sectional champs and not only did we make it to state but we won our school’s first game at state. As seniors, I think we’d like to leave that same way.
JA – Speaking of that game that you won at State your freshman year, wasn’t that against Milwaukee King? MM – Yes it was!
JA – That will make this year’s matchup even more fun for you! Let’s talk about your college plans. You will be attending Wisconsin on a softball scholarship. Was it a tough decision to pursue your softball career in college and not your basketball career? MM – It was actually hard for me to choose between all three sports that I play (volleyball, basketball and softball). Whatever sport I am in, I love it and don’t want it to end. When I took my unofficial visit to UW-Madison, I asked my parents what they thought I should do and which sport I should play. All they could answer was that the decision was up to me, and they’d miss seeing me play the other two regardless. Softball is my least experienced sport, and I did not start playing travel ball until the summer of 2008. I guess I’m just curious how much better I can become at a sport I’m inexperienced at. I’m really looking forward to playing at the division one level and competing in the Big Ten!
WHO AM I? I was a unanimous first team all-conference selection last season and a first team selection as a sophomore. I averaged 12.5 points per game last season and am averaging 10.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for my career. I have been on the varsity team since I was a freshman (and so have two other of my teammates). Both our boys and girls basketball teams have been extremely successful over the past few years and we seem to always be a topic of discussion once post season play rolls around (and I have won one state title)! One of the toughest players I have ever played against is Sarah Eichler (Grafton) and I am really looking forward to playing Verona this year. WHO AM I?
