Field set for 2009 Girls State Tourney

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS: The 37th Annual WIAA Girls Volleyball State Championships will take place Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 5-7, at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis.
CHAMPIONSHIPS INFORMATION: The single-elimination tournament features matches with a best-of-five-games, rally-scoring format. Eight teams will play for the State title in Division 1, with four teams still in contention for the State crown in Divisions 2, 3 and 4. Below is the schedule and match-ups for the tournament.

PRE-FINAL GAMES ON WIAA.TV: The quarterfinals and semifinals of all four divisions of the WIAA State Girls Volleyball Tournament will be streamed live on the Internet on WIAA.TV.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES ON FS WISCONSIN: Watch the delayed broadcast of the WIAA State Girls Volleyball Championships on FS Wisconsin. The Division 1 title match will be aired on Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. The Division 2 championship match will be aired on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. The Division 3 title match is scheduled to be aired on Nov. 21 at 4:30 p.m. And, the Division 4 championship match is scheduled for Dec. 2 at 9 p.m. Check local cable listings for the channel in your area.
LAST YEAR: Kenosha Tremper won the Division 1 title for the first time with a 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23 victory over Pius XI in the championship final. Waupun won its 11th title by defeating Catholic Memorial 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 in the Division 2 title match. Wisconsin Heights won the Division 3 championship with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-18 victory over Grantsburg in the title tilt, and Catholic Central won its third straight title by defeating Clayton 25-14, 25-16, 25-18 in the Division 4 title match.
ABOUT THE DIVISION 1 FIELD: Muskego is making its second straight appearance at State and its fifth in the last six years. This is the Warriors’ ninth appearance overall, which includes a runner-up finish in 2006. They defeated Brookfield Central in the Racine Park Sectional final to earn this year’s berth in the field.
D.C. Everest will embark on its eighth appearance at State and its third in a row. The Evergreens gained a tournament berth with a five-game victory over Eau Claire North in the sectional final hosted by Chippewa Falls.
Kaukauna is also making its eighth overall appearance in the tournament and its third in the last five years. The Galloping Ghosts’ best performances at the State Tournament came with runner-up finishes in 1981 and 1988. They defeated Green Bay Preble in the Ashwaubenon Sectional final to return to the tourney field.
Middleton qualifies for the State Tournament for the fifth time and for the second consecutive season. The Cardinals fell in the quarterfinals last year. This year, they defeated Madison La Follette in the final of the Waunakee Sectional to advance to State.
Divine Savior Holy Angels is making its fourth overall appearance and its first since 2004. The Dashers captured the State title in the second of two consecutive appearances in 2000-01, accounting for each of their previous experiences. They defeated Oak Creek in the Milwaukee Riverside Sectional final last weekend to qualify.
Burlington qualifies for the first time since its only other appearance in 1997. The Demons defeated Westosha Central in the Badger Sectional final to return to the tourney field.
Fond du Lac is also making its second appearance overall. The Cardinals’ first experience came back in 1994. They advanced into the tournament field this year with a four-game win over Neenah in the sectional final hosted by Fond du Lac.
Nicolet is the third team in the field with only one other prior experience in the State Tournament. That appearance came back in 1981. The Knights earned the berth by defeating Watertown in the Waukesha West Sectional final.
ABOUT THE DIVISION 2 FIELD: Last year’s runner-up
Catholic Memorial makes its fourth overall appearance. The Crusaders won the Division 2 championship in 2006. They defeated Kettle Moraine Lutheran in the sectional final for the second straight season to qualify for the State Tournament.
Xavier is making its first appearance since the second of two straight appearances resulted in a runner-up finish in 2006. It’s the fourth time the Hawks have qualified for State overall. They defeated defending champion Waupun in the Wrightstown Sectional final to earn their way to State. Both
Sauk Prairie and
Tomahawk are making their first appearances in the State Tournament. The Eagles’ berth comes by virtue of its four-game victory over Edgewood in the McFarland Sectional final. The Hatchets qualify for the first time following a four-game defeat of Hayward in the Altoona Sectional final.
ABOUT THE DIVISION 3 FIELD: Last year’s runner-up
Grantsburg is back in the tournament for the 10th time overall. The Pirates won the State title in 2001 and have additional runner-up finishes in 1989, 1998 and 2003. They are the champions of the Clear Lake Sectional after defeating Melrose-Mindoro in the final.
Cuba City also makes its 10th appearance and its first since winning the title two years ago. The Cubans also boast State titles in 1990 and 1992, and runner-up finishes in 1988 and 1991. They defeated Wisconsin Heights in the Wisconsin Heights Sectional final to advance to the final four.
Laconia is making its seventh State appearance and its first since 2006. The Spartans won the championship in 1998 after finishing runner-up the year before. They ousted Shoreland Lutheran in the final of The Prairie School Sectional final last weekend to join the tournament field.
Auburndale will experience the State Tournament for the first time following its four-game victory over Roncalli in the Stevens Point Sectional final.
ABOUT THE DIVISION 4 FIELD: Newman Catholic is making its third appearance at State and its second in a row. The Cardinals appeared last season in Division 3. This year, they move down a division. They have fallen in the semifinals in each of its two previous appearances. They are the champions of the Wausau West Sectional, defeating Tigerton in the final.
Highland is also making its third overall appearance. The Cardinals haven’t qualified since 1994, which followed its first-ever appearance in 1992. They defeated Royall in the North Crawford Sectional final to qualify.
McDonell Central and
Manitowoc Lutheran are making their first appearances in the State Tournament. The Macks gained their initial entry into the tourney with a three-game sweep over Rib Lake in the Augusta Sectional final. The Lancers’ first experience is being celebrated after defeating three-time defending champion Catholic Central in the Lake Country Lutheran Sectional final.
