By Mark Miller

The second annual 60Eight Tournament was held at Madison College Friday and Saturday and included six teams, including Illinois power Joliet West.

After taking in three games on Saturday, here are profiles for my unofficial all-tournament team.

Carson Koepnick

Carson Koepnick, 6-1, Sr., G, West Salem
Mr. Steady. Nothing seems to fluster Koepnick, the talented point guard for West Salem, the state's top-ranked WIAA Division 3 team in the latest WisSports.net Coaches Poll. Good things happen for the Panthers when Koepnick has the ball in his hands. Whether he's scoring, passing or just being patient while making the defense work, Koepnick is the guy who makes things happen for West Salem. In an 81-60 victory over Verona, Koepnick finished with 14 points, four assists and 10 rebounds as the Panthers improved to 4-0. NAIA schools Valley City State and Viterbo, along with several NCAA Division III programs, are in hot pursuit of Koepnick and with very good reason. He simply knows how to play the game.

Peter Lattos

Peter Lattos, 6-7, Sr., F, West Salem
Coach Mark Wagner has a lineup of talented veterans, and each of his top six players make big contributions. Lattos certainly is among the most productive players in the West Salem program. At 6-foot-7 and with good strength, Lattos can play with his back to the basket and back down opponents to score in the post. He can also step outside and consistently make three-point shots. Lattos runs the floor well and can score in transition, and he's also a good passer. In the win over Verona, Lattos finished with a game-high 20 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot. Lattos has an NAIA offer from Valley City State, and is beginning to hear from NCAA Division II programs as well.

Brett McConkey, 6-4, Sr., F, West Salem
Teams that win 27 of 29 games and advance to the WIAA State Tournament usually possess a good deal of mental and physical toughness. West Salem got that a year ago from McConkey, a three-sport standout who uses his physical strength and very good positioning to dominate the glass. As a junior, McConkey averaged 8.1 points and 10.4 rebounds as the Panthers went 27-2 and lost to Lake Country Lutheran in the Division 3 state-title game. He is doing his thing once again for the Panthers in 2022-23. In the win over Verona, McConkey finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds. He made a couple of three-point shots, dished out four assists and added one steal and one block. His toughness and rebounding are vitally important to the tremendous success West Salem has achieved the past two seasons.

Andrew Murphy

Andrew Murphy, 6-4, Soph., G/F, Verona
Verona came out with fire in its eyes as the Wildcats were looking to get a big victory over a highly regarded opponent. Verona trailed just 37-35 at intermission, but foul trouble and the precision play of West Salem proved to be too big of obstacles to overcome for coach Curtrel Robinson's squad. One of those players who encountered some foul issues was Murphy, a skilled 6-foot-4 wing prospect who can score in the paint and from the perimeter. Murphy played 28-plus minutes and did lead Verona in scoring with 15 points, but his overall impact on the game might have been bigger without the foul difficulties. Murphy eventually fouled out of the game, but in addition to his 15 points, he was able to contribute four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. He also drew five fouls from West Salem defenders. Murphy is one of the better scorers in the Big Eight Conference and a player collegiate coaches will monitor closely over the next several seasons.

Bennett Fried

Bennett Fried, 6-7, Sr., G/F, La Crosse Central
It's hard to imagine Fried playing any better than he did in the Riverhawks' third-place conquest of Waunakee. The lanky and athletic wing prospect finished the contest with 27 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. He made 12-of-17 shots from the field, including three-of-four from three-point range. He also had a nice two-handed dunk and scored with reverse layups off backdoor cuts. Also a stellar track and field athlete, Fried's best days are still ahead of him as he continues to fill out and add strength to his frame. But he was awfully good for coach Todd Fergot's club in the 68-43 win over Waunakee. Fried remains undecided about his college plans, but basketball and/or track and field figure to be a big part of his future.

Nic Williams

Nic Williams, 6-2, Sr., G, La Crosse Central
What Fried gets done with pizazz, Williams accomplishes with precision. A skilled lead guard with good speed and quickness, Williams might not get the highlight reel dunk or swat away a potential layup, but his presence on both ends of the court is a big reason why La Crosse Central is 5-1 heading into Tuesday's non-league showdown with West Salem. Williams was as efficient as ever against Waunakee, scoring 16 points, handing out four assists and coming up with a steal. He connected on 8-of-10 shots from the field and consistently beat his defender off the dribble on drives to the basket. Paired with physical and talented junior Henry Meyer in the Riverhawks' backcourt, Williams is one of the better unsigned seniors in Wisconsin.

Henry Meyer

Henry Meyer, 6-3, Jr., G, La Crosse Central
One of the better juniors in the state thanks to his physical strength and ability to get to the basket and finish through contact, Meyer finished with 10 points and five rebounds in the victory over Waunakee. He was even better against Joliet West on Friday in the 608 Tournament as he pumped in 16 points and missed just one shot from the floor. He also had five rebounds and a steal in the 69-55 loss. Meyer's ability to attack the basket and toughness on defense are major assets for La Crosse Central, which once again boasts one of the better teams in the state after finishing second in the WIAA Division 2 State Tournament a year ago.

Cal Klesmit, 6-2, Sr., G, Neenah
The Green Bay recruit is having a very good senior season after missing all of last year with an ACL injury. Klesmit scored a team-best 16 points in the loss to Joliet West while also hauling down four rebounds, handing out four assists, blocking a couple of shots and adding one steal. HIs activity on both ends was constant as the Rockets battled one of Illinois' top teams for a full 36 minutes. Klesmit is averaging a team-high 21.3 ppg as Neenah has won five of seven games under coach Lee Rabas. Klesmit scored a school-record 45 points earlier in the campaign in a Fox Valley Association victory over Appleton East.

Brady Corso

Brady Corso, 6-1, Jr., G, Neenah
Opponents of the Neenah basketball team better account for Corso on every possession or he will light up a scoreboard in the bat of an eye. Always ready to launch a three-point shot or attack the basket, Corso picks his spots well and is proving to be one of the top perimeter shooters in the state. He had 12 points and two triples against Joliet West while also recording six rebounds and four assists. He is part of a five-guard lineup for the Rockets that is tough to defend because each of Rockets' starters can score in different ways while also competing with energy and toughness. In Friday's semifinal victory over Waunakee, Corso made seven-of-nine shots from three-point range and scored a season-best 27 points.

Joliet West
Joliet West went 2-0 to win the 608 Tournament and boasts three outstanding players in senior Jeremy Fears, a 6-foot-2 guard headed to Michigan State; senior forward Matthew Moore, a 6-9 forward who is undecided about his college plans, and sophomore Jeremiah Fears, a 6-2 guard who already owns an offer from Gonzaga. All three are definite members of the All-Tournament team. Joliet West, which competes in the Southwest Prairie Conference in Illinois, is 9-2 on the season.
