Franklin vs Catholic Memorial

This matchup was our Kwik Trip and Wisconsin Dairy Game of the Week last year when both were defending champions, and it certainly lived up to the hype, as Catholic Memorial came through with a late go-ahead touchdown by Corey Smith to cap off a big game for him in a 34-28 CMH victory. The Crusaders are loaded again, and Franklin has a strong senior class of its own in what should be a true heavyweight matchup. The game will be played at Waukesha South High School.

Sussex Hamilton at Fond du Lac

A couple preseason top ten teams in Division 1 meet up in Fond du Lac, where Sussex Hamilton is hoping things go better than last year's big Week 1 matchup, when the Chargers were hammered 52-28 by Mukwonago as Wynn Stang went for 304 rushing yards. Sussex Hamilton will be adjusting to life without Nate Kollath at quarterback for the first time since before COVID. Fondy has a strong senior group with 15 starters back as they try to match last year's opening contest that saw them defeat eventual Division 2 champion Kettle Moraine 28-20.

Muskego at Verona

Verona has some excellent playmakers on defense, especially in the secondary, and they better be ready to tackle against the famous Muskego Wing-T. Last year, Muskego defeated Verona 28-6 in Week 1, rolling up 305 rushing yards. Verona went unbeaten in the Big Eight last season but didn't fare so well outside the conference, and this would be a big opportunity to make an early statement.

DeForest at Waunakee

These longtime rivals clashed for many years in the Badger-North and more recently the Badger-Large, but now they meet in what is technically a non-conference game, as DeForest has moved to the Badger-Small. Last year's game was close, with Waunakee winning 42-34 over their suburban rivals. Both teams are breaking in a new batch of offensive playmakers this season.

Onalaska at West Salem

These teams met twice last year, including an instant classic in Week 1. Onalaska got the upper-hand in that one, winning 14-13 in a defensive struggle. West Salem got its revenge in the state semi-finals, however, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 37-14 victory. It's good for everyone in the La Crosse area that these neighboring schools play each other in non-league play despite being in different conferences.
