Athlete of the Week Nominees: June 10-16

Aedan David, Aquinas

David had a week to remember last week as he helped the Bluegolds avenge a runner-up finish last season and take home gold at the WIAA Baseball State Tournament. The sophomore took the mound in the semifinal matchup with Cumberland and was untouchable. David tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the 10-0 run-ruled shortened win. He faced the minimum number of batters, striking out three and walking just one in his dominant performance. On top of that, David went four for four at the plate and drove in four runs on a double and three singles. In the ensuing 6-4 win over Kenosha St. Joseph, David added another hit in two plate appearances with a walk from his fifth spot in the batting order. David's no-hitter in the semifinals was just the sixth in the Division 3 tournament and fifteenth overall.

Axel Donaldson, De Pere

Donaldson was consistent for the De Pere baseball squad as the Redbirds came home with the program's first ever state championship. In a 2-0 win over Menasha in the quarterfinals, the senior utility man went one for three with an RBI, knocking in one of the two runs scored. He then went two for three with an RBI in an 8-1 win over Westosha Central in the Division 1 semifinals. Donaldson took the mound in this one, going six and two-thirds and recording all but the final out. He allowed just one run on three hits and struck out six batters, putting together a quality start. De Pere then knocked off Sun Prairie East 5-1 in the Division 1 state title game and again Donaldson was a difference maker. Batting from the leadoff spot, he went three of four from the plate with three runs scored, two stolen bases, and he recorded an RBI in the third straight state game.

Cora Erickson, Cedar Grove-Belgium

Erickson was unstoppable on the pitch as she helped the Cedar Grove-Belgium girls soccer team dominate en route to a WIAA Division 4 State Championship. In a 6-0 shutout of Regis/McDonell Central in the Division 4 semifinals, Erickson netted four goals herself on five shots on goal. The junior forward and the Rockets then squared off with The Prairie School with a state championship on the line. Erickson put constant pressure on the opposing defenses, recording nine shots, six of them on goal. She finished with a hat trick and added two assists in the 5-1 victory. Erickson broke her record set last of goals in the state tournament in Division 4 and has the second most netted of any division with her seven total.

Carter Gunderson, Eleva-Strum

Gunderson helped lead the Eleva-Strum baseball team to its first ever state title in the program's first ever state tournament appearance. On a team where everyone contributed, the senior helped both on the mound and at the plate. In a 3-2 semifinal win over Pacelli, Gunderson did not get out and batted in the game-winning runs. He went three for three from the plate with two RBIs, two stolen bases, and a run scored. Gunderson scored the first run for the Cardinals in the fourth inning and his two RBI double in the sixth inning proved to be difference. Not only that, but Gunderson came in in relief on the mound and pitched the final four innings, striking out four batters and allowing just two hits as he recorded the win. In the following 11-1 win over Northwood/Solon Springs in the Division 4 title game, Gunderson went one for one from the plate with two runs scored, a walk, and an RBI. Over the span of two games, Gunderson went did not get out at the plate and pitched four scoreless innings, helping his team to its first state championship.

Reese McCabe, Oregon

McCabe was a wall in goal as she led the Oregon girls soccer team to its sixth state title and second in the past three seasons. To open the tournament up, the Panthers shut out River Falls 3-0. McCabe and the Oregon defense was stellar. The sophomore goalkeeper saved all three shots on goal as she played all 80 minutes. She mirrored that performance in the Division 2 State Championship matchup against Whitefish Bay, where Oregon came away with a 1-0 victory. McCabe saved three shots in 80 minutes of work. Her two shutouts impressed as the Panthers captured gold.
