Thirty-six teams from across Wisconsin competed in the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Summer Tournament held last weekend in Plymouth. 

Following are some observations from the 18th annual event:

Pools A-B Most Valuable Player

Cohen Priebe, 6-0, Sr., G, D.C. Everest
An experienced lead guard who understands how to run a team, Priebe was fantastic in Plymouth. He led D.C. Everest to a 4-1 record and the Pools A/B championship by averaging 18.4 points per outing. He consistently made smart decisions with the ball that centered around involving his teammates. Priebel also was extremely efficient from the field, and went off for 27 points and seven three-point baskets in a 51-47 victory over Port Washington. He had at least one triple in each outing for the Evergreens. Already a 1,000-point career scorer, Priebe is the leader for a very good and ever-improving D.C. Everest squad that could push Marshfield and Stevens Point for the title in the Wisconsin Valley Conference in 2024-25.

Amare Hereford, 6-1, Jr., G, Beloit Memorial
Hereford, who owns NCAA Division I scholarship offers from Northern Illinois and Western Illinois, played at an elite level throughout the WBY Summer Tourney in Plymouth. His ability to use his speed, shiftiness, quickness and explosive burst kept defenders off balance. Whether he was soaring to the basket off the dribble or splashing long-distance bombs, Hereford was a handful to defend. He had 43 points and nine three-point baskets in an entertaining and highly competitive 76-74 loss to Beaver Dam. Hereford scored in double figures in all five outings for the Purple Knights, averaging 26.0 ppg while leading his squad to a 3-2 record.

Pools C-D Most Valuable Player

Nolan Jakubek, 6-6, Sr., F, Little Chute
Jakubek provides Little Chute with size, strength and the ability to take the ball aggressively to the basket. He was difficult to stop once he got a head of steam going, and was able to finish at the rim for the Mustangs, who went 4-1 in Plymouth. Jakubek is a consistent rebounder on both ends and also is a good screen setter within the Mustangs' offense. As a junior, Jakubek averaged 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds while helping Little Chute to a 15-12 record under coach Jake VanRoy.

Carson Bauer, 6-5, Sr., G, West Bend West
Another very good player in a North Shore Conference loaded with standouts, Bauer had one of the top performances of the entire weekend when he dropped 35 points and seven three-point baskets on Milwaukee Reagan. He exploded for 22 points in the first half of that contest, which Reagan was able to win with a late rally, 52-47. Bauer's size, ball handling, shooting and basketball IQ were impressive in Plymouth for a West Bend West that was without a couple of key players. Bauer earned second-team all-North Shore honors as a junior after averaging 16.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Pools E-F Most Valuable Player

Wes Rahn, 6-7, Jr., F, Lakeside Lutheran
The very definition of the term, "workhorse," Rahn was definitely one of the elite players at the WBY Tournament in Plymouth. Already holding an NCAA Division II scholarship offer from Northern Michigan, Rahn figures to add offers from scholarship-level schools over the next 12 months. His size, skill and all-out play are tough to deal with for opponents. It is not uncommon to watch Rahn block a shot, rip down the rebound, dribble the ball with speed down the court and finish at the rim -- all in one sequence. He averaged 21.8 points in leading Lakeside Lutheran to a 5-0 record in Plymouth, and went for 28 in the Pools E/F title game, a 65-63 overtime win over Howards Grove. Rahn led Lakeside Lutheran to a runner-up finish in last March's WIAA Division 3 State Tournament, and is poised for two additional years of torment for opponents in the Capitol North Conference.

Trent Grunewald, 6-3, Sr., G, Howards Grove
An under-the-radar prospect who competes with toughness, skill and a strong desire to win, Grunewald is a big, strong wing guard with deep shooting range and the ability to get to the basket. College coaches from the CCIW, NACC and WIAC were watching Grunewald in Plymouth, and they didn't leave disappointed. He buried six threes and had 25 points in the overtime loss to Lakeside Lutheran while also pumping in five triples and scoring 28 points in a win over Xavier. The returning Player of the Year in the Big East North Conference, Grunewald has what it takes to succeed at the prep and collegiate levels.

Pool G Most Valuable Player

Cade Dirkse, 6-2, Jr., G, Oostburg
A very physical and very athletic combination guard with size, strength and skill, Dirkse keeps coming at you, play after play, on both ends of the court. He is a good shooter from the perimeter and can also get into the lane with his strength and speed. Dirkse helped Oostburg to a 3-1 record in Plymouth despite the Flying Dutchmen playing without injured junior forward JJ Zavatchin. The Player of the Year in the Big East South Conference as a sophomore, Dirkse is one of the state's better guard prospects in the 2026 class. 

Pool G Breakout Performer

Kristian Bartl, 6-7, Soph., F, University School
An impressive young player with mobility, court vision and the ability to get to the basket, Bartl is not yet a big scorer for University School. However, he is a good option in the paint in the sense that he can set up teammates with his passing skills in addition to scoring off short drives to the hoop. Bartl earned second-team all-Midwest Classic Conference recognition as a freshman after averaging 15.8 points and 9.0 rebounds. He is part of a talented core of returning players for coach Andy Fitzgerald that also includes senior Hayden Baum and junior Brock Miller.
