Athlete of the Week Nominees: August 26 - September 1

Alayna Deprez, Luxemburg-Casco

Deprez was instrumental in Luxemburg-Casco going a perfect 7-0 and winning the Beast of the Northeast tournament, played at the Champions Center in Appleton. The junior setter, set the tone over the two days as the Spartans dropped just one set in the seven matches, a 2-1 win over Green Bay Southwest. Luxemburg-Casco swept Houghton, D.C. Everest, St. Mary's Springs, Kaukauna, Fox Valley Lutheran, and Bay Port. Deprez had at least 19 sets in each match. Over the course of the seven matches, she tallied 150 assists, 44 digs, 6 blocks, 5 kills, and 3 aces.

Sam Ersland, Wisconsin Dells

Ersland was the definition of a workhorse running back in Wisconsin Dells football team's 33-26 victory over River Valley in Week 2. The senior runner carried the ball 35 times for 285 yards and three scores, adding one catch in the close victory. Ersland carried the ball 35 of the 42 times for the Chiefs and averaged 8.1 yards per carry. With just 13 pass attempts, Ersland carried the ball on 65% of the Chiefs offensive plays that didn't result in a penalty or sack.

Payton Haugen, Brookfield East

Haugen is the top-ranked golfer in the Class of 2026 in the state of Wisconsin and for good reason. The junior golfer finished second at state last year as a sophomore and seventh as a freshman and has started out her third season of varsity golf with a bang. This past week, she finished atop the ranks in both events she competed in. Haugen competed at the Mukwonago Invitational first, played at the Morningstar Golfers Club in Waukesha. She shot a four-under 68 to win the event, outlasting Arrowhead's Nina Lang by two strokes. Haugen then shot a 34 at the Brown Deer Park Golf Club in Milwaukee. That was the best round for the Greater Metro Conference first mini-meet.

Madison Quest, Divine Savior Holy Angels

Quest was exceptional as she and the DSHA girls volleyball squad captured a tournament title at the Joust held at Homestead. DSHA did not drop a single set as they swept all seven matches over Kettle Moraine, Brookfield Central, Howards Grove, Kimberly, Franklin, Arrowhead, and Sussex Hamilton. The senior and Wisconsin commit played well from her outside hitter position. She tallied 50 kills, 47 digs, 9 blocks, and 8 aces over the 14 sets played.

Isaak Rucinski, Lourdes Academy

Rucinski started his junior campaign on the pitch with a bang for the Lourdes Academy boys soccer team. In an opening match with Pacelli/Iola/Scandinavia, the junior midfielder netted five goals to lead his team to a 6-1 victory. Rucinski's encore was just as impressive in an 8-0 victory over Berlin. He netted another hat trick with three goals, but assisted on two more for the Knights. Over the two contests, Lourdes scored 14 goals as a team. Rucinski scored eight of those and assisted on another three, accounting for 11 of the 14 goals scored in the team's first two matches.
