Looking Back

Clayton rebounded from a tough opening loss to McDonell Central with a 59-42 road win over Siren on Thursday last week. The Bears got 201 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Dayne Mumm, who also threw for 90 yards and a score.

Highland continued to impress in its inaugural 8-player season, putting a running clock on a solid Belmont program out of halftime before cruising home to a 36-0 win. Senior quarterback Bennett Smith threw for 161 yards and three touchdowns, with two of those long scores to John Dreischmeier.

North Crawford scored a big win to open play in the Ridge & Valley-8 West, going on the road to down Wisconsin Heights 26-12. Senior quarterback Andrew Munson threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns, as he averaged nearly 30 yards per completion.

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah scored a thrilling 44-38 win over Montello on a walk-off punt return. More on that in our Star of the Week feature.

Northwood/Solon Springs senior Jared Schultz continues to put up ridiculous stat lines, just as he's done his entire career. In a 50-22 win over Bruce, he threw for 198 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 193 yards and four scores, and recorded 22 tackles with a sack and forced fumble. He also returned a kick 80 yards for a touchdown.

Marion/Tigerton knocked off Three Lakes/Phelps in a 26-25 thriller on Friday, with Joey Zimdars throwing three touchdowns to Thomas Grimm, two of them in the deciding fourth quarter.

Oakfield pulled away from Abundant Life/St. Ambrose for a 59-27 victory, with quarterback Mitchell Moser throwing for 400 yards and six touchdowns, completing 13-of-20 passes. That's an average of nearly 31 yards per completion. Brayden Glugla hauled in five of those for 221 yards and two scores, while Bo Bijl caught four passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

Newman Catholic has been one of the top 8-player programs since making the switch a decade ago, but even the Cardinals are not immune to the challenges of an enrollment hovering right around 100. The team had several injuries in the first week, and saw more go down early in Saturday's game against Almond-Bancroft. With a roster significantly depleted, the Cardinals were forced to end their game at halftime, which meant an 18-6 win for Almond-Bancroft. Newman is hoping to get more players back and more young players up to speed to play this week.

Looking Ahead

The big game this week features top-ranked McDonell Central making the trip to fifth-ranked Owen-Withee in the first of what will be some huge games in the North Central-East Conference this year.

Coming off a loss to North Crawford last week, Wisconsin Heights gets another tough test this week, as the Vanguards will travel to Highland.

Speaking of North Crawford, it's an old school Ridge & Valley matchup for the Trojans this week as they'll welcome in De Soto on Friday night, with both teams sitting at 2-0 overall.

In the Mideast Conference, Port Edwards will make the trip to Almond-Bancroft as both teams will enter 2-0. In other noteworthy Friday contests, Luck will travel to Clayton, Hurley faces off against Flambeau, and Sevastopol will welcome in Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas.

Star of the Week: Brody Feldmann, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah

Brody Feldmann had already had a huge game for Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, but with the game tied at 38 with less than 15 seconds remaining, he put the finishing touch on a masterful performance with a winding 82-yard walk-off punt return touchdown to secure a 44-38 victory over Montello. Feldman totaled 376 all-purpose yards in the win, including 10 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown, threw three two-point conversions, and ran for a two-point play in the game. He even handled punting duties, averaging 36 yards per attempt.
