Athlete of the Week Nominees: September 30 - October 6

Cade Dirkse, Oostburg

Dirkse and the Oostburg boys soccer team picked up two more wins last week to improve to 9-1-2 on the season. The junior midfielder started his week off by netting four goals on six shots in a 5-1 win over Howards Grove/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah. Dirkse followed that up with one goal and three assists in a 5-0 win over St. Mary Catholic. Of the ten goals scored by the Flying Dutchmen, Dirkse assisted or scored on eight of them. For the season, he has 21 goals and 10 assists in 12 matches.

Mariska Kees, Laconia

Kees and the Laconia won seven matches this past week, including five at the Oshkosh North Invite that resulted in a tournament title. To start the week, the Spartans knocked off Waupun 3-0 behind 32 assists, six digs, one ace, and one kill from Kees. The senior setter then had 44 assists, 15 digs, 4 aces, and 1 kill in a 3-1 win over St. Mary's Springs. Laconia then picked up wins over Green Bay NEW Lutheran, Reedsville, Waupaca, Peshtigo, and Waupaca again at Oshkosh North, dropping just one set throughout the day. Kees tallied 104 assists, 24 digs, 15 aces, and 4 kills over 11 sets. Laconia improved to 21-2 overall.

Nina Lang, Arrowhead

Lang outlasted everyone at the the Waukesha South girls golf regional last week, as she shot a 74 overall, which was the third best score of the entire week of regional meets. The junior golfer competed at the Broadlands Golf Course in North Prairie, where she had won the Classic Eight Conference Championship the week before. Lang shot a 37 on both the front and back to finish with her 74, which was three strokes better than teammates Alexa Reed and Addison Johannes. Lang's performance helped Arrowhead to a regional title as the Warhawks scored 309 points, which topped the leaderboards.

Henry Mrotek, Sussex Hamilton

Mrotek led the Sussex Hamilton to a perfect 6-0 week including five wins and a tournament title at the Arrowhead Invite on Saturday. Earlier in the week, the Charger swept Wauwatosa West 3-0 as the senior setter had 34 assists, three aces, and three digs. Hamilton then picked up wins over Mukwonago, Pewaukee, Wilmot, Kaukauna, and Arrowhead to win the Arrowhead tournament title. Mrotek recorded 108 assists, 25 digs, 9 blocks, 9 kills, and 5 aces over 12 sets. The Chargers improved to 30-4 overall.

Conner Roche, Columbus

Roche put together a herculean effort this past Friday night for the Columbus football team. The Division 4, second-ranked Cardinals took on the L-Cats of Lake Mills who came in undefeated and ranked fifth in the Division 4 WisSports.net Coaches Poll. The senior running back carried the ball 24 times for 318 yards and five touchdowns as Columbus won 45-24. Roche had touchdown runs of 15, 21, 57, 65, and 67 yards.
