Darlington has won 26 consecutive SWAL games dating to late in the 2019 season. The favorites in the league again this year, the Redbirds are tied atop the standings with Cuba City, who both enter 5-0 in the conference. The Cubans are a very experienced team, with more than 25 seniors on the roster.
Both teams suffered losses in the non-conference, Darlington against Prairie du Chien and Cuba City against Potosi/Cassville.
"As a program we felt embarrassed on how we performed in Week 2 against a very good Prairie du Chien team," said Darlington head coach Travis Winkers. "We had to make it clear to our players that nobody was going to feel bad for Darlington and it is how we respond to this situation that can define our season. We are happy with how our kids have responded since then. We feel we have been getting better each week."
It's a similar story in Cuba City.
"We had mistakes on both sides of the ball but we have gotten better every week," Cubans coach Guy Kopp said. "Our offense is very balanced and our defense stiffened up and kids have been doing their Job. We have 27 seniors and their leadership has been the best part of the season."
With a strong chance that this decides a conference title, how are these teams approaching things?
"Every high school football game is special because there are so few of them compared to other sports that have 20+ games in a regular season," explained Winkers. "A conference championship game raises the importance level."
Kopp added, "They know it's a big game because it's the next game. We say that every week. The player's mindset is simple - 'Do your job' and let's win the battle up front."
