Somerset junior Xavier Roll has been selected as the Box Out Sports Athlete of the Week for the week of October 7-13 after a statewide vote on WisSports.net.
There were 3,183 total votes this week. Roll topped all vote getters with 1,517 votes. Marquette University High School's Tommy Novotny finished in second with 1,212 votes.
Roll has been on a roll this season (all pun intended) for the Somerset boys soccer team, continuing his domination on the pitch this past week in a trio of wins for the Spartans. Somerset knocked off Saint Croix Central 1-0 with Roll scoring the lone goal. He followed that up with two goals and two assists in a 5-0 shutout of Unity/St. Croix Falls. Roll finished the week again scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Osceola. With those wins, Somerset has clinched the Middle Border conference championship and a one-seed in the WIAA playoffs.
Roll continued his hot streak with two goals in a 7-0 win over Spooner/Shell Lake. The Spartans finish the regular season on Thursday against New Richmond before an opening playoff matchup with Spooner/Shell Lake next Thursday.
The Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Box Out Sports. It highlights the players who have "made a splash" in the world of high school sports each week. If you have a nominee for Athlete of the Week please send it to Colton Wilson.
