Athlete of the Week Nominees: October 14-20

Belle Kongshaug, Colfax/Elk Mound

Kongshaug took home her second straight WIAA Division 2 State championship this past week, pacing the field at University Ridge. The junior golfer shot a 76 over her first round of 18 and was one stroke behind Saint Croix Central's Addison Kofal. Kongshaug then shot a 77 on day two to finish with a 153 total score, which ended up besting second place Kofal by seven strokes. Kongshaug now has back-to-back state titles and a runner-up finish as a freshman in 2022.

Kylie Matz, Brookfield Academy

Matz was the top seed coming into the WIAA Division 2 Individual Tennis State Championships. She proved why, sweeping her way to the championship. The sophomore sensation swept Sarah Barton of Lakeland Union and Sasha Quandt of Lourdes Academy 6-0, 6-0. Matz squared off with third-seeded Kate Fortney of Aquinas in the championship match. She knocked off Fortney, a four-time state tournament qualifier, 6-1, 6-1 to capture gold and improve her record to 26-2 on the season.

McKenna Nelson, Beaver Dam

Nelson took home a state golf championship last week in thrilling fashion as she needed a playoff hole to do so. Competing at the University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, the sophomore golfer shot a 65 on day one and took a three-stroke lead over Brookfield East standout Payton Haugen after 18 holes. Nelson then shot a 73 while Haugen shot a 70 on the second day forcing a playoff hole, which Nelson won by shooting a par on, capturing the Division 1 title. Nelson's 6-under-par score of 138 tied for the lowest score over 36 holes in State Meet history. As a freshman Nelson finished second behind Haugen in the Division 1 state meet.

Clare Schaefer, Whitefish Bay

Schaefer was the three-seed coming into the WIAA Division 1 Tennis Singles State Championships and needed to win five straight matches to win it all Schaefer did just that after getting a buy in the first round, the junior beat Elkhorn's Alexandria Trost 6-0, 6-0. She then topped Greendale's Andjela Bogovac 6-0, 6-1 and Brookfield East's Caroline Raster 6-2, 4-6, 10-4. Schaefer squared off with two-seed Lexie Hankel of West De Pere in the semifinals and came away with a 7-5, 6-4 win, setting up a matchup with Verona's McKenna Thorson in the championship. Schaefer took home gold with a 6-4, 6-2 win, finishing the season 29-1.

Brody Schaffer, Winneconne

Schaffer led both the offense and defense as Winneconne knocked off Seymour, clinching an outright Bay Conference championship. The junior quarterback completed eight of fourteen passes for 80 yards but did most of his damage on the ground. Schaffer rushed the ball 15 times for 202 yards, averaging 13.5 yards per carry. He found the end zone four times, once in each quarter. Schaffer added seven tackles defensively as Winneconne finished the regular season 9-0 and earned a one-seed in the WIAA Playoffs.
