Well, it looks like the majority of tonight's games will be cancelled due to the weather. Let's hope we don't have a situation like last year where because of the unusually high amount of cancellations many teams had to scramble to get games in by the end of the year. As we'll be doing every Tuesday afternoon, it's time to announce the Week 2 Coaches Poll and take a look division-by-division.

Week 2 Coaches Poll

Division 1

Top-ranked Madison Memorial finally played its first game of the season on Saturday. The Spartans looked every bit the defending champs they are, racking up a 92-55 win over Madison West. Milwaukee King was ranked 5th in last week's poll, but a 38-35 loss to Whitefish Bay Dominican drops the Generals to #9 this week. Kaukauna was the fastest riser this week, going from unranked to #8 on the strength of wins over FVA rivals Appleton East (#9 last week, #13 this week) and Kimberly (#13 last week, unranked this week).

Division 2

As expected, Northwestern has slid from the top spot, although the Tigers didn't lose a game last week. They did however lose star guard Steve Tecker for the season. Expect them to still be a solid team, but as the coaches thought with moving them to #3 this week, they will have a much tougher time getting back to the state tournament. Port Washington takes over the top spot, with Waupun nipping at their heels. Wisconsin Lutheran is only a couple points behind Northwestern in 4th. Monroe, Wisconsin Dells, Edgewood, Prairie du Chien, and Plymouth all suffered at least one loss last week, and all but the Cheesemakers fell out of the rankings. River Valley, Pewaukee, Sauk Prairie, and Lake Mills are new additions to this week's poll.

Division 3

Defending champion Racine St. Catherine's has closed the gap between itself and top-ranked Fall Creek thanks to three wins over Division 1 programs so far this year. The real mover and shaker this week though is Whitefish Bay Dominican. The Knights knocked off Division 1's fifth-ranked team Milwaukee King and leaped from #6 to #3. Cuba City and Eau Claire Regis are nestled in behind them. Former #5 Brillion suffered a 12-point loss at the hands of Valders, and slipped all the way down to #14. Expect the Lions to come back strong. Oostburg, The Prairie School, and Watertown Luther Prep are new this week, replacing Colby, Kenosha St. Joe's, and Brookfield Academy.

Division 4

Second-ranked and defending state champion Benton got hit with a double-whammy of bad news last week. On Wednesday senior Michael Droessler underwent season-ending knee surgery to repair a torn ACL suffered in football, and on Friday the Zephyrs suffered their first conference loss since December of 2006, at the hands of Cassville. They slip to #5 this week. The other big story this week was similar to what we saw last year and in Division 7 in football this year, as instability in the bottom half to third of the rankings ran rampant. Expect to see that quite a bit this year as there is a lot of parity outside the top four or five teams in this division.
