WSN Bracket Projections

With regional seeding meetings this weekend, it is certainly time to start talking about the tournament.  And what better way to start than by projecting what teams will be seeded where in the various regionals (and sectionals for most of Division 1) across the state. At the above link, we have projected the seeds (using records and information available as of Tuesday morning; no Tuesday night games were factored in) for every team in the entire state. You can click on the different divisions and then find the sectional in the drop-down menu to locate the regionals and teams.

For those new to boys high school basketball playoffs, or unfamiliar with the process, the teams in each regional are pre-determined by the WIAA. This weekend, coaches from each team in a particular regional will get together and vote on which teams are to be awarded which seeds. There is a format and procedure for these meetings set forth by the WIAA which can be found here.

Included in that memo is what criteria and factors the coaches are encouraged to use when determining seeds. They include:

a. Coaches comments.

b. Head-to-head competition against teams in their regional grouping.

c. Comparative scores against like opponents.

d. Conference standings.

e. Relative strength of schedule.

f. Overall win-loss record.

g. Other special factors (e.g., injury of a key player, etc.).

Another recent trend at seeding meetings is for coaches to reference their team's RPI rating published by WisSports.net. The RPI ratings can be found here, and include a menu at the left to sort by each division.

Obviously, with so many factors to consider, it is often hard to determine exactly who will be seeded where and there is often a great amount of debate and discrepancy even within the coaches that vote. We have done our best to utilize the information available to us to determine the projected seedings, but is certainly not an exact science.

Again, these are unofficial seeding projections and are meant as a guide for fans, to facilitate discussion, and give a hint of what is to come. With teams playing games the rest of this week, these projections are certainly fluid and may change based on the outcomes of said games.
