Indiana Head Coach Tracy Smith has announced that Germantown left-handed pitcher Tyler Thicke has signed on to join the Indiana baseball team for the 2011 season.

The Colgate, Wis. native was a top prospect his sophomore season. But he suffered an arm injury in the third inning of the first game of his junior campaign. He then underwent ‘Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery and missed the rest of the season.

Thicke was 7-1 with a 3.02 ERA as a freshman, becoming the first frosh in state history to throw a no-hitter, and then had an 8-1 campaign with a 2.24 ERA as a sophomore. This season, he helped pitch Germantown to the state quarterfinals. He earned four letters for Germantown in baseball in addition to three in football and two in track.

"Tyler is coming off a major arm injury last year," Smith said. "Prior to the injury he was as a good a left-handed pitcher as we had seen. We will take it slow with him, but he has a chance to be very good."

Thicke tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in Germantown s 2-1 loss to Waukesha West in a WIAA Summer State Baseball quarterfinal game on July 28.

"We ve had him on a program all year and built him up for this all year getting ready for the playoffs," Germantown coach Parrish Wagner said. "He threw 14 innings in four days to get us here. We gave it a shot but fatigue just took over."

Thicke posted 48 strikeouts in only 27 innings in North Shore Conference play and also played center field for the Warhawks, earning first-team all-conference honors. He pitched a 2-1 complete-game victory over top-seeded Menomonee Falls in the sectional final to lead Germantown to its first state berth since 1986.
