He also has seven strikeouts and has allowed just three hits.

The count goes to 1-2 on Slaney. Remminger throws a wild pitch and Clerkin moves to second. But Remminger gets a called strike three to end the game.

Justin Remminger makes a great play, getting the lead runner on third on a sacrifice attempt by Shawn Monson. Weston Peterson then hits a deep fly to center field and Slaney is cut down at the plate trying to score from second.

12:23 p.m. --
Barneveld has not allowed a run in 25 innings. The Golden Eagles are making their second state appearance. Barneveld lost in the 2006 Division 4 semifinals. Marion is making its seventh appearance and first since 1993.

5th Inning --
Marion went down in order in the top of the inning. Barneveld, though, got its first hit of the game off Justin Remminger on a one-out double by Jacob Erfurth. But Remminger retired the next two Golden Eagles batters on a pair of fly balls to center fielder Eric Kroening to end the inning.

4th Inning -- Matt Mielke singled for Marion's third hit of the game but the Mustangs failed to score. Shawn Monson reached base on a dropped third strike for Barneveld but was stranded. The Golden Eagles are still looking for their first hit.

11:55 p.m. --
We just got a foul ball lined back into the When We Were Young booth in the press box. WWWY announcer Matt Menzel just missed taking a liner off his forehead. Jay Wilson and I protected our lap tops. Menzel got the ball on the rebound.

Shades of the last game of the Milwaukee Brewers regular season last year when the Chicago Cubs Derreck Lee lined a shot off the back of the screen of my lap top in the Miller Park press box. It shattered the screen and I had to return to Madison early to file my story.

I never got the ball that time either.

3rd Inning --
No score through three innings. Marion has had two hits and four baserunners, while Barneveld has had three baserunners but is still looking for its first hit.

11:42 a.m. -- WIAA Board of Control president Kevin Knudson is in the house for several radio and television interviews.. Knudson, who wears many hats, is also the Barneveld princicpal and athletic director. The former boys golf coach at the school, who also started the program, he is entering his second season as interim girls volleyball coach. .

2nd Inning --

1st Inning -- Marion pitcher Justin Remminger finished the first inning with three strikeouts, including Patrick Clerkin, who reached on a passed ball with two outs. Josh Slaney walked before Remminger got Shawn Monson on a punch out.

11:18 a.m. --
First pitch was at 11:12. Barneveld pitcher Weston Peterson issued a one-out walk to Justin Remminger. But he was erased on a double play 4-3. Barneveld coming up.

Meanwhile incoming WIAA executive director Dave Anderson has a push broom and is trying to dissipate the puddles in front of the first base dugout from last night's rainfall. Talk about an a strange situation.

10:28 -- The grounds crew heads out to work on the field as the teams in the next semifinal begin their warm-ups. Marion (25-2) will meet Barneveld (22-3) in about 35 minutes.

Catholic Central (21-9) vs. McDonell Central (21-6) -- Division 4 -- Game 1

Final -- McDonell Central 6, Catholic Central 5

WP -- Andy Davis , LP -- Rex Morrow

Morrow walked 11 batters, which erased the previous Division 4 record of six and was one off the record of 12 by D. Zuengler of Oostburg vs. Milwaukee Tech set in 1960.

Leading hitters:
McDonell Central -- Andy Davis 2-5, 2 runs, GW-RBI. Catholic Central -- Nick Junk 2-4, run; Nick Uhen 2-3, 2 RBI.

All five of Catholic Central's runs were unearned. McDonell Central made three errors but still pulled out the victory.

Catholic Central ends the season at . 21-10. The Hilltoppers suffered their first loss in the state tournament play (6-1). They had won titles in their three previous state tournament appearances in 2004, 2005 and 2008.

McDonell Central is making its third trip to state, losing in the 2004 Division 3 state semifinals and losing in the 2005 Division 3 state finals.

10:13 a.m. -- We're tied at 5-5 headed to the eighth inning.

8th Inning --
Catholic Central goes 1-2-3 in the top of the inning.

Rex Morrow walks his 11th batter of the game, issuing a free pass to Macs' lead-off hitter Alex Hiess for the second time. That ends Morrow's day on the mound. He switches positions with shortstop Tyler Floyd, who promptly strikes out Austin King after Hiess steals second base. Floyd issues an intentional pass to Jake Mcllquham to put runners on first and second with one out.

Andy Davis lines a short to right field that a diving Eric Pieters can't come up with and Hiess scores the winning run.

7th Inning --
Catholic Central grabbed a 5-4 lead when Nick Junk singled, moved to second after Tyler Floyd was hit by a pitch and to third on a fly ball to right field. Andy Davis then uncorked a wild pitch and Junk scored from third for the defending Division 4 state champions.

Davis gave McDonell Central hope in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out single to left field. Charlie Bohl followed with a shot in the hole that shortstop Tyler Floyd flagged down but was unable to make a play on. Robby Cooper flied out to left for the second out. That left it up to Jake Bohl, who had reached base twice on walks, as the Macks' final hope.

Bohl lined a shot up the middle that Floyd snagged with a desperation dive but Charlie Bohl beat him to second base and Davis scored from second for the tying run. Ben Ochs drew a walk, the 10th for Morrow today, but Carl Willom struck out to send the game to extra innings.

9:44 a.m. -- We had a short delay to start the game and the grounds are very wet after a steady rain overnight.

But Catholic Central and McDonell Central are tied at 4-4 in the top of the sixth.

The sun is fighting to come out but we're expecting to have a long day.
