Western Athletic Conference Updates

DENVER New Mexico State s Tiare Jennings and Louisiana Tech s Meghan Krieg have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 16-22. This is the first honor for both players.



Jennings, a freshman second baseman from Turlock, Calif. (Pitman), led the Aggies to a 4-1 record at the UTEP Invitational last weekend. She was 9-for-17 for a .529 batting average with five homers and 18 RBI over the five games. Against Cal State Northridge, Jennings hit a two-run home run. She followed it up with a pair of bombs against the host Miners. The first was a three-run home run and the second was a leadoff homer in the top of the sixth to bring the Aggies within one run. Her final two home runs came against WAC opponent San Jose State – a two-run bomb and a three-run homer. Jennings also scored seven runs, had a double, walked twice and only struck out twice during her 17 at bats. She posted a .579 on-base percentage, a 1.471 slugging percentage, made 14 putouts and supplied five assists on the week.



Krieg, a sophomore from Sonora, Texas (Sonora), recorded a 2-0 mark with a 0.54 ERA and 20 strikeouts on the week. She worked 13.0 innings, allowing only one run on five hits and held opponents to a .116 batting average against her. In a 4-1 win over McNeese State, Krieg allowed one run on three hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters in 6.0 innings of action. In a 3-0 win over Nicholls State, she allowed only two singles while striking out nine in the complete-game shutout.



Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: Michelle Moses of Fresno State hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs as the Bulldogs went 3-2 against four ranked teams at the Cathedral City Classic last week ... Hawai‘i s Tanisha Milca of Hawai‘i hit .357 with two multi-hit games as the Rainbow Wahine went 1-3 on the week ... Amberly Waits of Louisiana Tech hit .615 with eight hits, three doubles, seven RBI and four walks as the Techsters went 4-2 on the week ... San Jose State s Brittany McConnell set the SJSU career mark for RBI (119) and tied the career mark for home runs (27) as the Spartans went 1-4 on the week.



Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: Aubray Zell of Boise State went 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA and 10 strikeouts at the San Diego Tournament ... Fresno State s Mackenzie Oakes picked up her second complete-game victory over No. 20 North Carolina, striking out seven batters ... Kim Watson of New Mexico State led the Aggies to a trio of run-rule victories and posted a 0.47 ERA with 14 strikeouts on the week.



February 23-March 1

Hawai‘i s Tanisha Milca and Nevada s Mallary Darby have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 23-March 1. This is the first honor of the season for Milca and the second of her career. This is Darby s first career honor.



Milca, a senior outfielder from Kailua, O‘ahu (Kailua), led the Rainbow Wahine to the Bank of Hawai‘i Invitational title after scoring at least one run in each game. She hit .750 (6-of-8), had a 1.250 slugging percentage and a .833 on-base percentage with a team-high seven runs scored, 10 total bases and four walks. She hit her first career grand slam, the 26th home run of her career, which moves her into sixth place all-time in UH softball history. Her six RBI against Mount St. Mary s was also a career high and one short of the school single-game RBI record. In the bottom of the sixth inning in the first game against Mount St. Mary s, Milca sparked Hawai‘i with a leadoff single and later scored the winning run in a tight 2-0 win over the Mountaineers.



Darby, a freshman from Sparks, Nev. (Spanish Springs), went 3-0 in three starts with a 0.33 ERA, including two complete game shutouts. She struck out 26 and walked seven while giving up just one run in 21.0 innings of work. All three of her starts were complete games. She opened the week with a 4-1 win over Sacramento State, striking out 11 batters. At the DeMarini Invitational over the weekend, Darby shut out Minnesota (5-0) and Oregon State (3-0). For the week, she yielded just two extra-base hits.



Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: Lexi Straton of Boise State hit ..571 in three games on the week ... Fresno State s Caitlin Stiglich hit ..467 with a grand slam against Wisconsin ... Amberly Waits of Louisiana Tech hit ..500 with six hits and five RBI as the Techsters went 2-2 on the week .... Nevada s Kelsey Starr hit three home runs and tallied eight RBI as the Wolf Pack went 5-2 on the week ... Stacey Lien of New Mexico State hit ..429 on the week with a pair of doubles ... Utah State s Aubrie Stroman hit .308 on the week.



Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: Morgan Melloh of Fresno State went 1-2 with 26 strikeouts on the week ... Hawai‘i s Stephanie Ricketts went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 21.0 innings of work ... Meghan Krieg of Louisiana Tech went 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA on the week ... New Mexico State s Kim Watson picked up her first save of the season and struck out 24 on the week.



March 2-8

Boise State s Christina Capobianco and Nevada s Katie Holverson have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 2-8. This is the first career honor for Capobianco, while Holverson earns the honor for the second time this season and the fourth time in her career.

Capobianco, a freshman first baseman/designated player from Laguna Niguel, Calif. (El Toro), hit .909 with one double, five home runs and 12 RBI as the Broncos went 4-0 on the week. She was 10-of-11 on the week and was retired only one time, on a fly ball caught in deep right center. In a 13-1 win over Northwest Nazarene, Capobianco was 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI. She then posted another pair of homers and four RBI in a 7-4 win over Idaho State. Capobianco capped the weekend with the go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh inning in a 4-3 win over College of Idaho. She is in the midst of a five-game hitting streak and has at least one RBI in each of the last five games.

 

Holverson, a senior from Anthem, Ariz. (Cactus), went 3-0 and also recorded a save en route to all-tournament team honors at the Wolf Pack Classic over the weekend. She struck out 22 in 16 innings of work with just five walks and five earned runs. Holverson made two starts during the week and pitched Nevada to a pair of run-rule victories in those starts – 9-1 in five innings over Pacific and 10-2 in six innings over Southern Utah. Against Oregon on Saturday, she came on in relief in the fifth inning with Nevada trailing by four. She earned the victory in as the Wolf Pack came back for an 8-7 win. On Sunday against Southern Utah, Holverson came on in relief with Nevada ahead 6-5 and pitched two scoreless innings to earn her seventh career save.

 

Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: Haley Perkins of Fresno State had the winning hit and RBI in the bottom of the seventh in the Bulldogs 3-2 win over No. 9 California … Hawai‘i s Amanda Tauali‘i hit .625 with three doubles and two home runs as the Rainbow Wahine went 3-2 on the week … Amberly Waits of Louisiana Tech hit ..643 with nine hits, four home runs and 10 RBI as the Techsters went 4-1 on the week … Nevada s Brittany Puzey was named MVP of the Wolf Pack Classic after batting .667 with four doubles, two homers and seven RBI as Nevada went 4-0 on the week ... Jasmine Harris of Utah State hit .375 on the week.

 

Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: Boise State s Aubray Zell went 3-0 with eight strikeouts on the week … Morgan Melloh of Fresno State went 2-2 with 39 strikeouts … Hawai‘i s Stephanie Ricketts went 2-1 with 25 strikeouts on the week.
