Girls Track and Field - Week 2 Recap

After just two weeks of practice many teams loaded the bus to their first track and field meet of the 2010 season.

For athletes and coaches alike this meet can be very nerve-racking. Athletes have barely had a chance to get on a track if at all, practicing hand-offs in the school hallways, field events in the gymnasium, and facing the less than ideal Spring weather outside to get in some good miles. Coaches go into the first meet never knowing what to expect…

After this past weekend the bus ride home must have been much easier for athletes and coaches as there were many marks made around the state that look more like mid-season form than a first meet performance.

Girls Highlights:

The Nelson Daniels meet hosted at UW-Whitewater had a loaded field of 3200M runners. In the large school meet there were six athletes who finished under the 12 minute mark with the leader finishing in 11:02. Also in the 55M Dash Eileen Gehring (Madison Edgewood) and Danielle Barbian (Hamilton) posted identical times of 7.35 seconds placing them in the top 20 on the All-Time list. However the top sprint performance for the weekend went to Kat Keller (New Richmond) running in the Northern Badger Classic with meet record times of 7.31 in the 55M and 26.36 in the 200M.

The field event performances for the weekend were just as impressive as the track performances. At Fridays Point Invitational Rachel Melum (Iola-Scandinavia) leaped over 5 6" in the high jump and Leanna Rose (DC Everest) cleared 11 feet in the pole vault. On Saturday Cami Gilson (Arrowhead) topped the pole vault performances clearing 11 1". In the shot put, Angela Boushea (Monona Grove) tossed a monstrous throw of 44 1.25".
