Splash of the Week WisSport.net

Last week was a big week for softball and baseball around the state as teams were finally able to get some of their regularly scheduled games in. One conference in particular, the Dunn-St. Croix, saw some impressive pitching performances and earned this week's Splash of the Week.

On the softball side, Saint Croix Central's Nikki Brooks threw every pitch in the Panthers' five-game schedule last week, tallying a total of 44 strikeouts and just two runs against in 30 innings pitched. The senior pitcher picked up four victories and one loss against an all-Dunn-St. Croix Conference slate, knocking off Glenwood City and Colfax 13-0 and 1-0 Monday and Tuesday, taking down Mondovi 7-1 Thursday and splitting with fellow league contender Elk Mound in mirroring 1-0 decisions. Brooks also did some work with her bat, hitting .600 in those games while driving in seven runs and registering five extra-base hits. Saint Croix Central is 8-4 on the season and is clinging to second place in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference race with an 8-2 league mark.

On the bigger diamond, Boyceville's Ryan Bloom had his own stellar performances last week, throwing two no-hitters in a three-day span. The junior hurler struck out 15 batters in seven innings of work in a 2-1 victory over Saint Croix Central Monday (his only walk given up eventually scored), then the ace repeated that effort last Thursday with 13 K's in a 4-0 win over Pepin. Bloom is currently 7-0 on the season with a blistering 0.79 ERA with 105 K's and just 16 hits and 12 walks on the season. The Bulldogs are one game back from league-leading Elk Mound at 7-1 in DSC play, and 7-2 overall.

Speaking of Elk Mound, sophomore Garrett Phillips threw a one-hitter in the Mounders' 8-0 victory over Saint Croix Central Thursday, striking out nine. Phillips also went 3-for-4 on the night with three stolen bases and three runs scored. The Mounders ace is also 7-0 on the season with 63 strikeouts recorded on the year.

Honorable Mention

Bria Halama, Independence/Gilmanton: Halama recorded a season-best 38' 4.75" mark at Whitehall's Dairyland Double-Duals event last Thursday in the always awkward triple-jump. Her performances in the 100-meter dash (12.95 seconds) and 200-meter dash (26.24 seconds) rank her eighth and second respectively in the Division 3 honor roll in those events--Halama currently also bosts the top D3 time in the 400-meter dash set in early April at the Holmen Empire Invite, 59.2 seconds, that also ranks eighth-best in the state.

Winnebago Lutheran Girls Soccer: The Vikings steamrolled through its four opponents last week, including picking up some vital Flyway Conference victories via 3-1 and 8-0 decisions over Saint Mary's Springs and North Fond du Lac respectively. Saturday WLA took out Berlin and Omro at the Waupun Quad in 4-0 and 8-0 finals. Winnebago Lutheran is the top-ranked team in the lastest Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Division 3 poll and currently boasts an 11-0-0 overall record.

Marissa Savitch, Homestead: Savitch flexed her muscles at the Highlanders' home invitational Saturday, tallying some of the best hurdling times in the state. In the 100-meter highs, Savitch torched the track for a mark of 14.86 seconds--almost half-a-second faster than the previous mark set by three different athletes. She also entered the 300-meter low honor roll in second place with an impressive 46.02 mark.
