With state playoff match ups being played, and litigated, in Wisconsin these next few weeks, the girl's state championships were decided over the weekend in Madison.  By ousting second-place finisher The Prairie School by 45 shots, Madison Edgewood is the 2011 WIAA girl's state golf champions and the recipient of the PlayinTheDells.com's Splash of the Week.

The Crusaders came into the state tournament as the perennial favorites after winning 10 of the last 11 championships (seven taking place in Division 2).  The team lost by one shot last year to the Hawks, 668 to 669.  After last year's slip up Edgewood looked to be on a mission through the tournament, breezing through regional and sectional competition on their way to University Ridge Golf Course in the state capitol.

Edgewood started off the two-day competition by shooting 318 on day one, 30 shots in front of The Prairie School.  They were led that day by junior Lexi Greytak who shot a 3-over par 75.  Freshman Caroline Lake also came up big for the team, shooting a 80 on the first day of competition.

Lake and Co.'s success continued on the next day, where the team pushed the lead on the Hawks from 30 to 45.  The freshman shot a 7-over par 79 for the Crusaders, while Greytak added her own 80 to the team total.  Greytak finished with an impressive 155 total through the event, finishing second to two-time defending individual state champion Casey Danielson of Osceola.

With this victory Edgewood has one every state championship since 2001, excluding last year's runner up performance.  During that span the Crusaders have had two individual state champions.

The Splash of the Week is sponsored by PlayInTheDells.com. It highlights the player, coach or team that has "made a splash" in the world of high school sports. This could mean coming out of nowhere to do something great, going above and beyond the call of duty, etc.
