The two-time defending state champions in Division 5, Newman Catholic, who lost five starters to graduation in the spring, are showing no signs of rust  this season with a 2-0 record and winner's of this edition of the PlayinTheDells.com's Splash of the Week.

All-Conference guard Sarah Connolly and Co. kicked off the regular season last Tuesday with a close victory over an up-and-coming Wausau West team out of the Wisconsin Valley Conference.  The defending Marawood-South champions defeated the Warriors 50-39.

Newman Catholic, who had won 48 of their last 49 games, continued their winning ways three days later with a commanding victory over North-Division foe Prentice, 68-14.  The Buccaneers, who were the only team to beat the Fighting Cardinals in their last 50 games (48-42 on March 3 last season), proved to be no match for the Fighting Cardinals, failing to have any player score more than 4 points.  Connolly, who ranked fifth on the team in scoring last season, embraced her new role as the team's leading scorer, dropping 28 points.  She was assisted by Honorable Mention All-Conference guard Brianna Jehn, who chipped in 12 of her own points.

Though Newman Catholic is expected to have at least some growing pains this season, they seem to be on the right track as of now with such an impressive start to the season.  They will face their first true test of the season on January 13 when they face Edgar in what should be a hotly contested conference game.

The Splash of the Week is sponsored by PlayInTheDells.com. It highlights the player, coach or team that has "made a splash" in the world of high school sports. This could mean coming out of nowhere to do something great, going above and beyond the call of duty, etc.
