When the girls’ basketball programs at Assumption and Auburndale clashed earlier this season, the game was decided by three points.  The Royals walked out that game victorious but one could tell that the Apaches had their number.  Almost two months later the two teams met up again in Auburndale and, once again, the game was decided by a few points.  These two programs are the winners of this edition of the PlayinTheDells.com’s Splash of the Week.

As in the first contest, Assumption (16-1, 10-1) came out on top this past Tuesday, defeating Auburndale (11-6, 7-4) 26-21.  The 47 combined points was the lowest scoring contest for either Marawood-South Conference team.  Defense was key in this game, the two teams only combined for 16 baskets from the field with the Royals going 9 of 34 from the floor.  The Apaches only scored one basket in the first quarter and did not score again until there were four minutes left in the half.  Meanwhile, the No.3 Royals went on an 8-0 run to close the first before adding only one basket of their own in the second to put the halftime score at 10-5.

A ten-point combined third quarter put Assumption ahead, 14-11, but the fourth quarter was when both offenses finally woke up.  Auburndale scored 10 points in the fourth period and got within one point with a little over two minutes left in the game, but a 12-point effort by the second place Royals put the game out of reach in the end.

The teams’ December 16 game was a higher scoring affair but was still close at the final buzzer.   Assumption walked away with a 47-44 victory to put them at 6-0 to start the 2011-12 season.  Mary Sigler led all scorers with 17 points that night, compared to the 13 points she scored last week.  Auburndale’s Nicole Nikolay led the Apaches’ attack again with 13 points after posting 12 in the first game.

Both teams have key games coming up to end their regular season schedules.  Auburndale will travel to Neillsville tonight to take on the No.3 Warriors of Division 3.  Assumption has a bigger test in the No.1 Newman Catholic Fighting Cardinals (Division 5), a game with conference championship implications.
