Below are the nominees for the Army National Guard Athlete of the Week for the week of April 30th through May 6.  Voting is below and will be open until Thursday at 4:00pm with the winner announced Friday morning.

Josh Baker, University School baseball – The Wildcats (15-0, 10-0 Midwest Classic-North) remained undefeated this week after routing Saint John’s NW Military Academy on Tuesday and Friday and Waterford twice on Saturday.  Baker, the 2011 co-MCC Player of the Year, allowed just one run and struck out 23 through 10 innings last week, including a 5-inning no-hitter performance against SJNMA on Tuesday; USM won 18-0.  The senior also had three homeruns and 13 RBIs through the four wins.

Theron Baumann, Monona Grove boys track and field – A week after moving up to fourth all-time in the discus (195’-8), Baumann threw himself among the elites in the shot put this past at the Madison Memorial Spartan Invitational.  After fourth-place finishes in both events at the state meet last season, the senior is now ranked No.15 in state history after throwing 62’-9 ½ on Friday, almost 8 feet further than his closest opponent.  He also won the discus by over 37 feet with a toss of 179’-7.

Sammy Laatsch, Wausau West softball – Despite dropping three-of-five games this week the Warriors (7-10, 4-3 Wisconsin Valley) are tied for third place in the conference.  West dropped a Tuesday game against D.C. Everest, 1-6, and went 1-2 at the Pulaski Tournament over the weekend, losing games to Freedom and Algoma.  But on Friday the Warriors faced conference-leader Stevens Point (12-4, 6-1), which was sporting a 93-game winning streak in the Wisconsin Valley.  Laatsch was brilliant for West, not allowing a hit through the first five innings and ending 3-for-4 with two RBIs on the offensive side in a 5-3 victory.  SPASH had not lost since May 2005.

Dana McMorrow, Kimberly girls soccer – The Papermakers (9-2-1, 4-0-1 Fox Valley Association) went 3-0 last week to remain one spot behind Appleton North in the FVA standings.  Kimberly defeated conference opponents Oshkosh West and Neenah on Tuesday and Friday, respectively, and hosted Waukesha West on Saturday.  McMorrow, a sophomore midfielder, was held point-less in the first two contests but hit the game-winner in the 63rd minute against West to give them their third loss of the season.  McMorrow had not scored a goal since an April 12 game against Appleton West.

Molly Seidel, University Lake School girls track and field – The Lakers traveled to Hartland and Mequon on Friday and Saturday to take part in Arrowhead’s Myrhum Invitational and the Homestead Invite, respectively.  Seidel, the three-time defending champion in the 1600m and 3200m in Division 3, posted the top in-season time in the latter event on Friday with a time of 10:21.97—she also owns all-time record in the event at 10:09.89 from a preseason meet in Washington state.  She followed that up the following day with a win in the 1600m; she ran a 5:08.15
