Below are the nominees for the Army National Guard Athlete of the Week for the week of May 21st through the 27th.  Voting is below and will be open until Thursday at 4:00pm with the winner announced Friday morning.

Joe Abernathy, Kettle Moraine boys track and field – The Lasers won the Waukesha North Sectional and were runner-ups at the Brookfield East Regional this past week as the state meet commences this upcoming weekend.  Abernathy, who qualified for the state last season in the 100m and long jump, will make a return in the former event as well as the 400m relay this weekend.  He missed out in the long jump by nine inches.  He is a favorite in the 100 after posting a 10.62, almost one-tenth of a second faster than all other Division 1 qualifiers.  Defending champion Jalen Gillie will miss state after pulling a hamstring at the Menomonee Falls Sectional.

Trent Borgardt, Pewaukee baseball – The Pirates (4-0, 3-0 Woodland-Blue) kicked off the summer baseball season with four victories in three days, three of which came from conference opponents.  They won their first game of the season against Port Washington on Thursday, 9-6, and then defeated Brown Deer at home the following day, 5-4.  On Saturday they traveled to Madison to take on Saint Francis in double header action, winning 10-1 and 5-4.  Borgardt, a junior shortstop, was 2-of-3 with 2 RBIs and a double against Port Washington and in the second game of the Saint Francis series, with the count 1-and-2, “blasted a 2 run bomb to left field,” according to Adam Dobberstein.

Aubrey Kampa, Hortonville girls soccer – The Polar Bears (15-6-0, 9-5-0 Bay) were 2-1 last week as the regular season wraps up and the playoffs begin on May 31.  Despite a 0-2 loss to Seymour on Thursday, Hortonville won two early-week games against Shawano, 1-0, and New London, 2-1.  Kampa, the leading scorer in the state with 107 total points, scored the lone goal against Shawano on Monday, and she then added another goal and an assist in the Tuesday win over New London.  The Polar Bears will face Fond du Lac on Thursday.

Mariah Schultz, Onalaska Luther softball – The Knights (19-4, 9-3 Coulee) won their Division 3 regional playoff game this past Thursday against Melrose-Mindoro, 3-0, to advance to a semifinals matchup against Westby on May 29.  Schultz, the reigning conference MVP, pitched a perfect game that day, striking out 12 while also hitting a homerun for Luther.

Tessa Thurs, Edgar girls track and field – The Wildcats cruised through regionals and sectionals as they head to state as the favorites to win the Division 3 crown for the third time in as many years.  Thurs, the defending champion in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, will return to La Crosse in both events as well as the 1600m relay and triple jump.  Aside from the triple jump, she is the top-seeded athlete in each of the other three events.  Only six other girls’ programs have won three-straight state titles.
