Homestead -- It had all the makings of an incredible high school football game, and Friday's matchup between defending Division 1 champion Arrowhead and Division 2 champ Homestead certainly lived up to the hype. Arrowhead jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but the Homestead defense dug in and kept it at that margin until halftime. The offense was then able to grind out a third quarter score, setting up a momentous final quarter. Led by a pair of crucial scrambles from quarterback Nick Allen, the Highlanders of Homestead marched down the field and scored when the senior signal-caller slipped into the end zone from 2 yards out. Homestead held off Arrowhead's last gasp effort at the end and ran out the clock for a 13-7 victory.

Kenosha Indian Trail -- In just its second year as a varsity program, Indian Trail is making a statement early in the season. After knocking off Eastern Wisconsin Conference favorite Plymouth last week, the Hawks took on Stevenson (IL), the top-ranked team in Illinois' largest class. Trailing 14-6 at halftime, Indian Trail got a safety from Jeromy Jorgensen in the third, followed by a 17-yard touchdown run from quarterback Zack Gianakos to go up 15-14. The margin held as they went on for the win. Gianakos struggled passing the ball but ran for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Andrew Jazdzewski added 92 yards on the ground.

Loyal -- Loyal and Athens shared the league title with Owen-Withee last season, and were expected to compete for the championship once again. Loyal got the early advantage, defeating the Bluejays 26-7 in a game that could have been a larger margin of victory. The Greyhounds defense held Athens to just 92 total yards of offense while racking up 367 of their own.

Mondovi -- The Buffaloes opened the season with a nice win over Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau and headed to last year's Middle Border Conference champion Durand in Week 2. They fell behind 12-0 but got a big 24-yard touchdown pass from Zach Ganschow to Mitch Stamm with just 1 second left before halftime. Brett Vetterkind, who finished with 94 rushing yards, scored the game-tying touchdown in the third quarter and Ganschow converted the winning two-point conversion as the 14-12 margin held up until the end.

Pewaukee -- The Pirates figured to contend for the crowded Woodland-West title after claiming an outright championship in 2012. They haven't gotten into conference play yet, but scored a quality non-league win over Wisconsin Lutheran on Friday. Collin Sternad scored three first half touchdowns and finished with 185 yards, while Ryan Stepanovich added 117 yards and 1 score on just 7 attempts. Ben Tenpas only attempt 4 passes but completed 3 of them for 103 yards and 1 touchdown as Pewaukee scored a 35-20 victory over the Vikings.
