The Dave Krieg Award is given annually to the state's top senior quarterback as part of the WSN Senior Football Awards. The award is named after former D.C. Everest and Milton College athlete Dave Krieg, who went on to play 12 seasons in the NFL and still ranks in the Top 15 all-time in most passing categories.

The pre-season watch list was trimmed down to 15 semi-finalists, and five finalists for the award have now been selected. Winners are announced the week of the state finals.

Dave Krieg Award Finalists:

Emmett Enright, Madison Memorial – Enright saw some action last year for the Spartans but few could have predicted the breakout campaign he would have in 2015. Near the top of the state's passing leaderboard all season, he completed 160 of 292 attempts (54.8%) for 2,577 yards and 26 touchdowns. A First Team All-Conference pick, he helped the Spartans to a second place finish in the Big Eight and a spot in Level 2 of the postseason. “Emmett has progressed so greatly since the beginning of the season,” said head coach Adam Smith. “And the scary thing is he's still getting better. His efficiency and decision-making have improved dramatically.”

Garrett Groshek, Amherst – A three-year starter for the Falcons, Groshek is over 1000 yards both rushing and passing this season, marking the third straight year he has done so. This year, he has a 143.2 quarterback rating, completing 68% of his passes (117-172) for 2226 yards and 37 touchdowns, with just 3 interceptions. This despite playing only one full game during the regular season, and a couple series in others. He's also rushed 102 times for 1,258 yards and 14 touchdowns, helping the Falcons to a perfect 13-0 record so far. “He's a tremendous leader who holds himself and others accountable on and off the field,” said head coach Mark Lusic.

Clayton Ladsten, Green Bay Southwest – Ladsten led the state almost all season in passing yards, as he's taken control of the new fast-paced offense at Southwest. He completed 218 of 325 passes this season (67.1%) for 2815 yards and 25 touchdowns. “He was a difference maker for our program and his commitment to his team and the program this past off-season assisted us with getting back into the playoffs,” said co-head coach Patrick Wallace.

Max Meylor, Mount Horeb/Barneveld – Meylor is a three-year starter for the Vikings, going over 2000 yards each season. He ranks 6th on the state's all-time passing yardage list. As a senior, he completed 217 of 348 passes (62.4%) for 2787 yards and 19 touchdowns. An excellent athlete, he added 12 rushing touchdowns as well. “In 23 years of coaching high school football, I have not coached a more competitive young man than Max Meylor,” said head coach Travis Rohrer. “I believe he is the best quarterback in the state and I look forward to him being offered a D1 scholarship in the near future.”

Zach Simons, Xavier – The Hawks made the move to the Bay Conference this year, and all they did was go undefeated during the regular season and advance to Level 3, with Simons once again spear-heading the offense. A dynamic, multi-dimensional threat, he completed 143 of 261 passes (54.8%) for 2,096 yards and 22 touchdowns, adding 1,089 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground. “He made huge plays to lead our team to a Bay Conference title,” said head coach Dave Hinkens. “Zach has worked harder than any quarterback I have coached in my 15 years at Xavier.”
