Each week WSN will take a look at the happenings in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference, which includes many of the two-year campuses in the UW system. A look back at the big performances and news from the week before, a look ahead to some of the big games coming up, plus a Player of the Week will be featured.
Stop me if you've heard this before, but UW-Marathon posted a couple dominating victories in the last week. Last Wednesday, the Huskies defeated the UW-Barron club team 100-16 after leading 39-0 at the end of the first quarter. Last night, Marathon hammered Barron again, 106-22. In between those games, there was a challenge however. On Saturday against Marinette, the Huskies held off a late Buccaneers push for a 69-56 win.
Marinette did score wins over Manitowoc (58-48) and Fond du Lac (66-64) this week, as the Buccaneers have won six of eight games since Christmas.
Waukesha all but wrapped up second place in the WCC with a 76-73 win over Fond du Lac on Wednesday. The Cougars were down 18-5 at the end of the first quarter, but fought back and used a big fourth quarter to secure the victory. On Saturday, Waukesha topped the Barron club team 93-40.
Only a handful of games are on the schedule for the next week. Second place Waukesha travels to Manitowoc tonight, while Marinette hosts Washington.
UW-Marathon puts its unbeaten WCC record on the line on Monday when the Huskies travel to Washington. Marathon won 112-40 in the first matchup of the season, as Morgan Rachu had 51 points.
It is hard not to pick Marathon's Morgan Rachu each week, and she's now picked up her third WCC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor. In a 100-16 win over Barron last Wednesday, Rachu had 34 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 steals while making 14-of-18 shots from the field. She also had 34 points in Saturday's closer 69-56 win over Marinette, and capped off her week with 43 in another win over Barron last night. The 5-8 sophomore is averaging 37 points per game on the season.
