Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Mondays.

Alumni Update

As the regular season dies down in college basketball and conference tournaments begin to take fold, many in-state athletes are seeing their seasons and some their college careers come to a close. This week’s edition will be the last of the 2017-2018 season of boy’s basketball round-up. To all the alumni playing at the next level, congratulations on your season and good luck next year.

A big theme of the last few weeks has been players crossing the 1,000 point threshold in their college careers. That trend continued as three players surpassed that milestone this past week.

Leading off, Lamonte Bearden has been a key piece in Western Kentucky’s great season and has helped the Hilltoppers into position for a bid into the NCAA Tournament. Last week, the Germantown graduate had 10 points and 4 assists in an 88-66 win over Old Dominion on Saturday. With that, he surpassed the 1,000 point career mark.

Bennett Koch shot a perfect 8 for 8 from the field en route to 25 points in Northern Iowa’s 68-63 win over Valparaiso on Tuesday. That scoring total put the Ashwaubenon alumn exactly at the 1,000 point mark in his college career.

The third player to cross that 1,000 point threshold was Chandler Diekvoss for Lindenwood University. The West De Pere alum had 21 points on 8 of 10 shooting in a 67-60 loss to Northwest Missouri. He followed it up with 16 points while Brad Newman (Brookfield Central) had 31 in an 88–70 win over Missouri Western on Saturday. Teammates Max Meylor (Mount Horeb) had 12 points and Adam Pohlman (Neenah) had 9 points and 6 assists in the contest.

Brevin Pritzl had been on a bit of a shooting slump for the University of Wisconsin earlier in the month, but things have turned around for the De Pere High School grad. That turnaround was no more apparent than in Wisconsin’s 73-63 overtime win over Minnesota. Pritzl had a career high 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting from deep. He connected on two of those three pointers in the clutch overtime period.

The WIAC tournament began last Wednesdsay and concluded Sunday as UW-Stevens Point beat UW-Oshkosh in the semi-finals and UW-River Falls in the finals en route to the championship. M.J. Delmore (Wisconsin Dells) had 23 points while Canon O’Heron (Bangor) and Nate Dodge (East Troy) each scored in double figures in the 71-63 win over Oshkosh on Friday. The trio then combined for 42 points in the 59-44 championship win over River Falls on Sunday.

Sandy Cohen III has been nothing short of great for UW-Green Bay since becoming eligible after his transfer from Marquette University last year. The Seymour High School alum had a career high 36 points and 11 rebounds in Green Bay’s 96-90 win over Oakland on Thursday. He followed it up with 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists in the 107-97 win over Detroit on Saturday. Cohen III shot 20 of 31 in those two games. For his performance, he was named the Horizon League Player of the Week.

Cohen III wasn’t the only one putting up gaudy numbers in the Horizon League last week though. Bryce Nze (Arrowhead) continued a great sophomore campaign at UW-Milwaukee by posting 23 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 assists in the Panther’s 72-49 win over Detroit on Thursday.

The Midwest Conference tournament also started and concluded last week in Division 3 basketball. Ripon College beat St. Norbert College 82-60 in semi-final play on Friday to earn a shot in the championship. Cal Shultz (Muskego), Trent Jones (Dodgeville), and Tyler Semenas (Laconia) combined for 48 points in that contest. In a close 79-76 loss in the championship to Monmouth, the trio then combined for 44 points while Set Kostrowksi (Sauk Prairie) added 11.

Reed Timmer is very close to doing what only eight players in the Missouri Valley Conference have ever done, and that is score 2,000 career points. The New Berlin Eisenhower grad had three straight 20 point games this past week for Drake to move him into 10th place all-time in the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring. He currently sits at 1,956 points.

Te’Jon Lucas has quietly been having a solid sophomore season at the University of Illinois. This past week, the Milwaukee Washington alum had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in Illinois’ 93-86 close loss to ninth ranked Purdue on Thursday.

Michigan Tech’s Kyle Monroe has been mentioned numerous times in this article for his explosive scoring outputs. This past week, Michigan Tech lost two close overtime games to Wayne State and Davenport by a combined 5 points. Monroe, an Ashwaubenon High School alum had a combined 67 points, 11 in overtimes to try and will his team to victory.

Joe Sherburne crossed the 1,000 point mark earlier in the season, but that hasn’t slowed the Whitefish Bay graduate down. He led UMBC to an 83-75 win over Umass Lowell on Saturday by putting up 21 points and 10 rebounds. This was his first double-double of the season.

Lastly, as the season winds down, all-conference teams are being voted on. Keep a look out sometime in the next few weeks as we post an article with all those in college basketball who earned regular and post-season honors.
